The San Francisco 49ers didn’t practice on Tuesday, but that didn’t stop fans from asking whether or not the team should trade for Alvin Kamara. The answer to that is “no.”
‘Feel the cringe’: 49ers still salty about Super Bowl failure
“I can feel the cringe any time that film comes on,” Williams said. “Everybody still is pretty much holding a grudge about the last game and they can’t wait to get out there and kind of start that quest again. I’m just happy to be a part of it and hopefully I can get back to the big dance with those guys and we can have a different outcome. ... They’re definitely motivated and they’re definitely driven by the way that last year ended.”
Experience and a decent camp should save Pettis’ roster spot. However, the 49ers used a seventh-round pick on Jauan Jennings in this year’s draft, and added a slew of other free agents. After a rough 2019 campaign where he wound up getting benched for the final few weeks and the postseason, Pettis is not a lock to get his spot back this year.
Kyle Shanahan has Lukewarm Praise for 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo
A reporter asked head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday if he thinks Garoppolo has improved his decision-making this offseason. This question came a day after 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh praised Garoppolo for making quicker decisions this year than last.
I assumed Shanahan would echo Saleh’s statements.
He did not.
Shanahan was much more measured with his praise of Garoppolo than Saleh was. “The more you’re in a system, the more you go against the same defense over and over, the more things become second nature,” Shanahan explained. “So you expect that from (Garoppolo). You expect that from him. You expect that from a lot of guys who are going through camp and going against the same players and coverages for a couple years here.
“I think our whole team is pretty sharp at going against each other. We’ve had enough of that. We’re ready for that to end. So the quicker we can go against some other people, we’ll see how it’s panned out.”
Gee, Kyle. Tell us how you really feel.
No. 3: Nick Bosa leads SF 49ers with double-digit sacks
Even though Nick Bosa was a sheer force on the field last season, he still didn’t wind up leading the team in sack production.
That honor, actually, went to veteran defensive end Arik Armstead who boasted 10.
But one could make the argument Bosa was much more effective a pass-rusher than Armstead. Case in point, Pro Football Focus gave Bosa a pass-rush productivity grade of 9.6 — highest on San Francisco’s defense — whereas Armstead’s was at 6.5. One of the issues, at least early on to an extent, was Bosa just missing out on finishing plays. And there was a stretch during the second half where Bosa recorded just one sack between Weeks 13 and 17 before he ramped up again during the playoffs.
To be counted among the league’s greats, however, Bosa should set an achievable goal in total sacks, getting beyond that double-digit mark and reminding everyone within the SF 49ers’ organization why he was worth the No. 2 overall pick back in 2019.
Trent Williams’ brush with death has him appreciating life with 49ers
“I did feel invincible,” Williams said in a recent phone interview. “I can’t lie. I mean, you know, I was just celebrating going to my seventh straight Pro Bowl and, you know, boom, you’re hit with the news that you got cancer. So it really knocked me off my high horse.”
His perspective is filtered through appreciation. His invincibility has been erased by humility, and that humility ensures he enjoys all of this. The big fancy stuff — the private jet access, the exquisite cars, the diamonds — is even more special because he understands life is short. The small, meaningful things — the precious smiles of his daughters, the challenge of getting better, enjoying going to work — are even more profound because he was faced with losing them.
“Yes, that’s dead on man. I’m happy,” Williams said. “The vibe is amazing. It lifts my spirits. It’s just a good atmosphere to be in and I think it’s very refreshing for me in Year 11. What I’ve been through gave me a different outlook. And, you know, I’d just rather take advantage of my time here and not focus on the negative. I know tomorrow isn’t promised by any means. So I just try to live in the moment and I’m just enjoying myself right now. And this organization makes it a lot easier for me as well.”
