Golden Nuggets: Could there be any surprise trades by the 49ers before the season?

Today should be a busy day as Friday the San Francisco 49ers didn’t make any cuts. Every team must be down to 53 on their roster by 1 p.m. PT.

49ers mailbag: Who starts at right guard? What the defense’s ‘Turbo’ package?

Eric A. asks: I wonder if Joe Woods in Cleveland would have any interest in Ahkello Witherspoon?

At one point during the week, the 49ers were looking into trading Witherspoon and Witherspoon was aware of this. For one reason or another, that plan was scrapped. Maybe it was because Jason Verrett hurt his hamstring. Maybe it was because the 49ers didn’t get the right kind of nibbles. I don’t know.

Cleveland would have been an interesting destination because, as you note, Woods was the 49ers’ defensive backs coach a year ago and now runs the Browns defense. He is also fond of Witherspoon. The issue with Cleveland, however, is that Kevin Stefanski is the head coach. And last year, Stefanski was the Vikings’ offensive coordinator who helped get Witherspoon benched in the 49ers’ playoff opener.

SF 49ers: 3 trade targets on Jaguars as they hold fire sale

The 49ers should explore taking advantage of the Jaguars’ recent offloading of players, potentially engineering trade packages. One potential fix could be for the SF 49ers to target Jaguars wide receiver Chris Conley, who at 6-foot-3 and 205 pounds, would automatically become one of the team’s biggest targets. And it’s hard to ignore Conley’s five touchdowns in each of his last two seasons, plus his 775 receiving yards from a year ago. Conley is a pending free agent in 2021, set to earn up to $3.745 million this season. It’s not a cheap contract, per se. But it’s within the Niners’ budget and would be off the books next season.

Why the 49ers made Tom Compton take a Pay Cut

Yates theorized the 49ers restructured Compton’s deal because he lost a competition to be a starter and now must accept backup’s money. And that probably is a large part of why they made Compton restructure. He did not play well at any point during training camp. And even though he took most of the starting reps at right guard, Daniel Brunskill most likely will replace Compton as the starter during the regular season. Brunskill had to play center during camp because Weston Richburg and Ben Garland are injured.

But there could be another reason the 49ers restructured Compton’s deal.

The 49ers are contenders for the Super Bowl. Their rivals have made big all-in moves this offseason. The Seahawks traded for Jamal Adams. The Saints signed Emmanuel Sanders. And the Buccaneers signed Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski and Leonard Fournette.

Could the 49ers make a big splash before the regular season begins?

Seahawks Sign Former 49ers Pass Rusher Damontre Moore

The veteran defensive end played for the Seahawks in 2016 but most recently was with their NFC West rival in San Francisco. In addition to his time with the 49ers and Seahawks, Moore has also had stints with the Giants, Dolphins, Cowboys and Raiders. Pete Carroll praised Moore after the team picked up the defensive end during the 2016 season.

“This is an exciting player that we picked up,” Carroll noted, per 247Sports. “We worked him out earlier, didn’t have a spot on the roster for him, and then we made a spot for him. I went back and did some studying with [general manager] John [Schneider] and we just liked his motor. This guy plays really hard, just like our guys do. He already has demonstrated that on the practice field. So, he’s going to be really part of the game. He’s going to play.”
