The San Francisco 49ers have Tuesday off. Deebo Samuel is set to meet with doctors so perhaps we’ll have an injury update.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan: Fake crowd noise is ‘form of human torture’
The 49ers coach had his team practice with fake crowd noise piped in recently at Levi’s Stadium and he was clearly not a fan.
“Oh my god … that really is a form of human torture,” Shanahan said during an episode of the 49ers’ “Brick by Brick” series.
“It’s terrible,” general manager John Lynch replied. “And it starts and it doesn’t stop too.”
The 49ers players themselves didn’t seem to mind as much, though.
“That’s not bad how it was,” quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo said.
“It wasn’t for you guys?” Shanahan asked.
“Not at all,” Garoppolo said.

2. A better Jimmy G
It’s easy to forget that 2019 was Jimmy Garoppolo’s first full season as an NFL starting quarterback. The 28-year-old quarterback flourished under Shanahan’s system, completing 69.1% of his passes while helping lead the 49ers to a 13-3 regular season record. And while the 49ers’ offense is centered on their ground attack, Garoppolo was much more than a game manager in 2019.
“He’ll be back. He’s a good player,” Montana said of Garoppolo during an appearance on ”NFL Network’s Good Morning Football.” ”You just have to get him more opportunities to be in that situation.”
“I had six clean-outs in my knee,” Montana said, “and they wanted me to wear a brace, and you just can’t get used to it. Hopefully, you’ll see a fresher, different player this year, although he had a pretty good year last year. I’m looking forward to him doing the same thing.”
Do the 49ers Need Deebo Samuel Week 1 Against the Cardinals?
Samuel is not needed to win against the Cardinals nor does his absence deliver a massive blow to the 49ers. Is it unfortunate and not ideal? Of course. Samuel is a stud and allows Kyle Shanahan to get wildly creative with him in the lineup.
But they do not need Samuel to give them leverage over the Cardinals. They already are poised to win that game with or without him, so why not bring him along slowly so he doesn’t risk further injury or sustain a different injury since he needs to get back into game shape.
There is always all this talk that the 49ers are loaded, which is certainly true, so if that is the case then they do not need Samuel back for Week 1.
Will he get injured or re-injured? Probably not, but that isn’t the point. The point is it worth risking him for a game that the 49ers do not need him in? And the answer is clearly no.

“I can say to his development so far: he’s going to be a monster out there,” Tomlinson responded. “I’m so excited to see him go out there and show what he’s got. He’s been working his butt off all of camp, and it’s been showing in practice. I’m personally really excited to see him play, and I’m sure everybody else is. He’s going to be a monster out there, I can tell you that.”
49ers’ Kentavius Street casting doubt — and blockers — aside as season arrives
• Defensive ends Bosa and Ford were in uniform when Monday’s light practice began, but another defensive starter, linebacker Fred Warner, remains on the league’s COVID-19 /reserve list. Neither Ford (calf) nor Bosa (quadriceps) have practiced in full since midway through training camp. Verrett (hamstring) also was missing at the start of practice.
On offense, fullback Kyle Juszczyk (hamstring) was in uniform. However, would-be starting receivers Deebo Samuel (foot) and Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) were not on hand. General manager John Lynch said Samuel has “a shot” at playing against the Cardinals on Sunday. Also absent was center Ben Garland (ankle).
The 49ers will submit their first official practice report of the season on Wednesday when their preparation for the Cardinals begins in earnest.

“He doesn’t get tired, man,” Williams said Monday on 95.7 The Game’s “Bonta, Steiny & Guru.” ”It’s ridiculous to see how well he plays when he’s 60 snaps into a game. It reminds me of Justin [Smith] and those guys and Ray McDonald, because they literally never came out the game. They played 90 to 95 percent of the snaps.”
