The 49ers nailed down their “final” 52-man roster on Saturday, leaving one roster spot open. On Sunday, we should find out who is on the team’s 16-man practice squad.
NFL roster cuts: 3 waived players SF 49ers should try to claim
After being part of a front-office makeover with the team that drafted him, the Arizona Cardinals, former UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen found himself dealt to the Miami Dolphins a year later and now finds himself on the waiver wire following Miami’s drafting of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in this year’s draft.
It’s anyone’s guess whether or not Rosen will ever be able to resurrect his career, which has been dealt multiple blows in a short period of time.
Yet San Francisco should at least express some interest. Here’s why.
Both backup quarterbacks behind Jimmy Garoppolo, Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard, are going to be free agents next year. Beathard the undrafted variety and Mullens a restricted free agent. Rosen has a much higher ceiling still than Beathard, whose 1-9 record as a starter doesn’t command anything on the open market. And with uncertainty behind Mullens’ future beyond 2020, it wouldn’t hurt to lay claim to Rosen as a stash-and-develop candidate.
At worst, he’d be an upgrade over Beathard, who’ll otherwise hold the No. 3 spot on the quarterbacking depth chart this season.
And at best, the still-young 23-year-old Rosen could be developed into a viable commodity for 2021 and potentially beyond.
Fun fact: Russell Wilson actually has the third most quarterback wins (5) at Levi’s stadium behind Colin Kaepernick and Jimmy G(ame Manager) since the stadium’s inception in 2014. Wilson also has a career 12-4 record against San Francisco, the most wins he has versus any single team. The Seahawks usually seem to fare better in Santa Clara, and by this time of year Seattle will be looking to lock up better playoff seeding while the 49ers will be looking to enter the offseason. If this is how the 49ers’ season goes, it will be an unmitigated disaster.
49ers Issues lie With the Interior Offensive Line and Nowhere Else
There is a lot to play with here for the 49ers, but it is clear that they have a plan in mind do with the extra cap space. And no, I doubt it is to sign Clowney, who I would be surprised if he even considered the 49ers since he would surely want a team where he could start to rack up stats for his next big contract.
Either way, the interior offensive line is a pressing concern for the second consecutive season for the San Francisco 49ers. There are ways to get over this hump of the shakiness at that area without making a transaction like getting Garoppolo on the run, adding extra players in the backfield, and even counter plays.
But that will only get the 49ers so far before they come across talented defensive lines that expose them and if that happens, “issues” at receiver and edge rusher will look foolish.

“Jimmy be talking so much trash out there,” Kinlaw explained, “and I like it because quarterbacks don’t usually be talking to me like that. But me and Jimmy got this type of relationship going on where every time I see him, or he sees me, we just talk trash to each other. That’s just how it goes.”
Martin also asked Kinlaw how he envisions looking back on his career when it is over. How does the defensive tackle want that career to be defined?
He answered: “As the best defensive lineman to ever lace them up, honestly. That’s just how I see it. I don’t see it no other way. That’s how I’ve seen it from the start.”
