Jets Release LB James Burgess

According to a report by Adam Schefter, the New York Jets have released linebacker James Burgess. The Jets re-signed Burgess to a one year contract last spring after a 2019 season in which he led the Jets in tackles.

James Burgess was claimed off waivers by the Jets in May of 2019, was cut during final roster cuts, and was signed to the Jets practice squad in early September of 2019. The Jets suffered numerous injuries to their linebackers last year, and Burgess was promoted to the 53 man roster, ultimately becoming a starting linebacker for the 2019 Jets and leading the team in tackles. His release less than one year after starting 10 games for the team comes as a mild surprise.

Prior to his time with the Jets, Burgess spent time with the Dolphins, Chargers, Ravens, Jaguars and Browns. At a still young 26 years old and with starting experience in the NFL, perhaps Burgess will catch on with another team this year. If not, he may be a candidate for the Jets practice squad in a few days.
