Luckily it does not appear to be serious
Carolina Panthers coach Matt Rhule told reporters after practice today that tight end Ian Thomas hyper-extended his toe near the end of today’s work. A later MRI apparently came back clean, so this does not appear to be serious. Thomas, entering his third year in the NFL, is poised for a potential breakout season with the departure of stalwart tight end Greg Olsen to Seattle in the off season. One of the more intriguing aspects of Thomas’s game is his athleticism relative to his size. His 4.74 speed at 6 foot 3 inches and 260 pounds makes him a tough match up for opposing defenses.
The New Orleans Saints offenses have been known to exploit tight end mismatches in the past, so expect former Saints Joe Brady and Teddy Bridgewater to utilize the position a fair amount. Whether or not those opportunities go to Thomas is yet to be seen. Let’s hope his toe recovers soon because any swelling would make the near-impossible task of filling Greg Olsen’s shoes even tougher.
