17. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES. Carson Wentz is coming off quite a streaky year. He started the 2019 season well — significantly better than the box score suggested — earning the highest PFF grade in the NFL through the first six weeks of the season. After that, though, his grade rank fell to 25th. That has been the story of Wentz’s career, with part of the reason being his subpar accuracy. Over the past two years, Wentz ranks 29th in the NFL in the percentage of accurate-plus passes thrown to a receiver with a step or more of separation. He’s in that tier of slightly above-average quarterbacks who can produce a top-tier season in any given year, and there is nothing wrong with that. With the recent injuries of Alshon Jeffery (out until possibly October) and first-round rookie Jalen Reagor (will likely miss the first few weeks), the Eagles desperately need youngsters John Hightower and JJ Arcega-Whiteside to step up. Hightower was always pegged by us as a possible steal in this past draft’s loaded wide receiver class with his deep speed and route-running.

Well, I was going to publish my final Philadelphia Eagles 53-man roster projection on Friday morning but the team unexpectedly made 13 moves tonight. So I’m doing it now instead with the benefit of what we know so far.

How does this affect the Eagles? In 2020, I do believe this rule will be advantageous to the Eagles in a season in which they selected 10 players in the draft. With so many young players to fit onto the roster, being able to protect four players each week will allow them to roster the young guys, while keeping other back-of-the-roster veterans on the practice squad for potential part-time duty on game day. (We’ll get to that shortly.) Additionally, the Eagles have already been hit hard by the injury bug, and if recent history is any indication, that will continue into the regular season. In 2019, the Eagles called up a slew of practice squad guys to the active roster, most notably Boston Scott and Greg Ward, who helped the Eagles get to the playoffs. The bigger the practice squad, the more options they have at their disposal.

“It’s gonna be all on Carson Wentz to put together a full season and elevate that team,” an NFC exec said. “He’s very talented, but obviously the injuries have hurt him. He will have more speed on the outside this year.” First-round pick Jalen Reagor is eliciting plenty of bold predictions about his season based on buzz created in camp. And watch out for J.J. Arcega-Whiteside, who looks poised to rebound from a choppy rookie year. He’s had a very strong camp. Evaluators agree new defensive additions Javon Hargrave and Darius Slay upgrade the line and secondary in big ways. Slay, in particular, is a luxury the team simply hasn’t had on the back end in a while. Slay’s 56.4 Pro Football Focus ranking last year in Detroit isn’t ideal, but many evaluators give him a pass because he ran heavy man coverage without much pass-rush help, and his relationship with the Lions had soured.

All three were heavily involved in Training Camp and seemed to make the most of their opportunities. All three have been waived, leaving the Eagles with three running backs on the current roster – Miles Sanders, Boston Scott, and Corey Clement. What does it mean? It means that we are less than 48 hours from the 4 PM 53-man roster deadline and anything can happen. And everything usually does. The Eagles are going to make sure they are well stocked at running back both on the active roster and on the practice squad (up to 17 players for the Eagles). Going into a season with three running backs? We’ll see if that is truly the case. One of the big questions entering Training Camp was whether the Eagles would add a veteran back to a young room, and they haven’t done so. Assistant Head Coach/Running Backs Coach Duce Staley has spoken highly of his room for the players’ work effort, their maturity, and their talent, the three players waived on Thursday included.

As mentioned, if you have been paying attention for a while then you knew that this was a possibility. Fellow safety Xavier Woods suffered an injury during last Sunday’s scrimmage and there was logic to the idea that maybe that might provide Clinton-Dix with more of an opportunity to wedge himself in, but alas, that was not the case. The last words of Todd Archer’s report are undoubtedly interesting but they are also literally true. Right now, the Cowboys have the aforementioned Woods and Thompson, Donovan Wilson, and rookie Reggie Robinson II at safety. That’s it, although Mike McCarthy has floated names like Daryl Worley and Chidobe Awuzie (who is also not 100% health-wise) as potential options. Needless to say, another body sure could go a long way.

The biggest name left in free agency looks like he’ll find a home soon and lucky for the Saints organization, they’re on the list. Former Texans and Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney is said to have narrowed down his options to two clubs including the New Orleans Saints. The Tennessee Titans are also in the mix and will be making their pitches against the Saints. Sports Overtime host Nader Mirfiq was well ahead on the news that was confirmed by ESPN’s Dianna Russini.
