What was the most surprising Lions cut?

NCAA Football: New Mexico State at Washington State James Snook-USA TODAY Sports

As we wait for rosters to be finalized, what surprised you the most on cut day?

Cut day is a brutal day for everyone involved, whether you’re a head coach, general manager, player or even just a fan. It’s not fun to see someone’s dreams get put on hold and even though it doesn’t always mark the end of the road for most players, not seeing your name on that initial 53-man roster has to come as a sizable blow.

Of course, rosters can still change quite a bit in these next few days as teams try and shuffle players around at the bottom of the roster and place others on their practice squad or injured reserve. Still, there are always many surprises each year when it comes to cuts.

Today’s Question of the Day is:

What was the most surprising cut the Lions made?

My answer: To me the most surprising move was releasing fifth-round pick Jason Huntley, who by all accounts was having a very good training camp as a change-of-pace back. I thought that drafting Huntley might have meant that Ty Johnson was on the outside looking in, but it appears that they felt Johnson was more worthy of that initial roster spot.

Even as a fifth-round pick, it is very unlikely that Huntley will be poached by another team, especially without any NFL tape out there. So, in essence, this move is harmless if all you’re worried about is him sticking around with the Lions. However, I thought Huntley could contribute right away, and while that is still possible should they decide to promote him to the active roster soon, it seems as if the Lions might not have a role for him right away which comes as a surprise to me.
