Eagles reportedly promote Josh Adams from practice squad to active roster

Hey, that’s not a wide receiver.

The Philadelphia Eagles are signing practice squad running back Josh Adams to their 53-man roster, according to a report from NFL insider Mike Garafolo.

This news is a bit unexpected considering the Eagles desperately need help at wide receiver. But apparently they need help at running back as well.

Adams being promoted to the roster doesn’t seem like a great sign for the availability of Jay Ajayi and/or Darren Sproles this week. Ajayi suffered a back injury early in the Eagles’ Week 2 game against the Buccaneers. The Jay Train later returned but after the game he told reporters that his back was “f***ed up.” As for Sproles, he suffered a hamstring injury during practice last week and was ruled out ahead of Sunday’s game.

Adams, a Bucks County native, originally signed with the Eagles after failing to be selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. Philadelphia gave him one of the biggest undrafted rookie signing bonuses in the entire league.

Adams showed some positive signs during the preseason and made a run at the fourth running back job but ultimately lost out to Wendell Smallwood. Now his spot on the 53-man roster is guaranteed for at least three weeks based on how practice squad rules work.

It’s currently unclear what corresponding roster move the Eagles will be making to free up a spot for Adams. Stay tuned for more updates.

UPDATE: The Eagles are now even thinner at wide receiver after releasing DeAndre Carter to make room for Adams.
