The free agency intrigue over one of the Texans’ 2018 captains is growing.
Tyrann Mathieu is coming off a stellar 2018 campaign in Houston. After five seasons with the Arizona Cardinals, the former All-Pro free safety nicknamed “Honey Badger” agreed to a one-year deal with the Texans. Mathieu is now again a free agent, and several teams have reportedly shown interest in the 26-year old.
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports reported that the Baltimore Ravens are expected to make a “strong push” for Mathieu if he does indeed hit the market. The Ravens released Pro Bowl safety Eric Weddle on Tuesday, leaving the position open for a potential free agent suitor.
La Canfora also reported that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are taking a good look at Mathieu. It does make sense with the connections they have. General manager Jason Licht, head coach Bruce Arians, and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles were all a part of the Arizona Cardinals organization when Mathieu was there.
After the postseason loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Mathieu told a Houston Chronicle reporter that he wants to remain a Texan and that he loves the organization, to paraphrase. Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle tweeted Tuesday night that the Texans are making their own push to keep Mathieu. According to Wilson, general manager Brian Gaine has been in contact with Mathieu’s agent to discuss a contract extension, although free agency does not officially begin until March 13 at 3 p.m. central time. Wilson described it as a “fluid situation.”
Texans are making a push to try to retain safety Tyrann Mathieu, including a preliminary contract offer, according to league sources. Fluid situation, but they are doing what they can to keep him. My sense is he wants to remain in Houston, but he will have plenty of offers

Mathieu is part of a deep free agent class for safeties that includes big names such as Earl Thomas, Landon Collins, Lamarcus Joyner, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, and Adrian Amos Jr.
My general feeling at the moment is that Mathieu will sign an extension to remain in Houston, but he will see plenty of interest from other teams.
