Report: Eagles trading Michael Bennett to the Patriots

Because of course they are.

It looks as if the Philadelphia Eagles have found a suitable trading partner for former Seattle Seahawks star Michael Bennett.

The veteran defensive end is close to being dealt to the New England Patriots, whom it must be noted in this article held the mighty Los Angeles Rams offense to 3 points in this year’s Super Bowl.

According to Philadelphia Inquirer reporter Jeff McLane, the picks involved (at least for now) will be for the 2020 NFL Draft.

Last year, the Seahawks traded Bennett and a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Eagles in exchange for a 2018 fifth-round pick and WR Marcus Johnson, who was later dealt to the Indianapolis Colts.

Bennett was due to make $6.2 million in base salary for 2019, but he also indicated he wouldn’t take a pay cut and wanted his pay to increase. The Eagles already have Brandon Graham and Derek Barnett, so Bennett was the odd man out given he’d be reduced to a reserve role despite recording nine sacks last year.

If the Patriots do land Bennett, it may be a sign that they won’t keep Trey Flowers, their best pass-rusher and pending free agent. Bennett would also presumably reunite with Greg Schiano, who’s reportedly going to be New England’s defensive coordinator, but nothing has been made official on that front. Bennett played for Schiano in the 2012 season when he coached the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That did not work out very well.

“I think he just wants to flex his power,” Bennett said of his time with Schiano. “He has small (man’s) syndrome. I still talk to guys who are there, and trust me, there’s not much respect for him in that locker room.”

Maybe Bill Belichick can help smooth things out between those two.
