One of the players who benefited from Pete Carroll’s secondary experimentation down the stretch in 2018 was cornerback Akeem King, and now he has a new contract to show for it.
The third year defensive back played all 16 regular season games for the Seattle Seahawks last season, including one start. The majority of King’s snaps were matchup dependent—most notably the victory over the Chiefs in Week 16—and his return will continue to give Carroll and the Seahawks flexibility on the back end.
Per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, King and Seattle agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.4M, including a $400,000 signing bonus. With incentives, the deal could rise as high as $2.05M.
King was set to become a restricted free agent, however, as both this writer and my colleague John P. Gilbert have pointed out previously, it was unlikely the Seahawks would tender him. Now, Seattle brings King back at a cheaper cost, and he’ll get the chance to continue to increase his value, before hitting the open market for the first time next spring.
