The Ravens made an addition to their outside linebacking corps yesterday in Pernell McPhee, and it appears they still aren’t done beefing up that position. This time, a 2015 first round pick strikes an agreement to join the fray:
Pending a physical, former #Broncos first-round pick Shane Ray plans to sign with the #Ravens, source said. Some pass rush help for Baltimore.

Should this go through as expected, it’s not only an intriguing signing in a vacuum, but also on other levels as well. Namely, it’s another body into the mix and adds some perspective onto the McPhee signing.
Rather than just kicking the tires on one guy, Eric DeCosta appears to be hedging them against one another. If they both work out as even somewhat productive pass rushers that would be ideal, but if even just one is able to outplay his expectations, then these are two low cost investments worthy of making.
As for Shane Ray himself, he has 14 career sacks, 12 of which came within his first two seasons which looked relatively promising. Since then he’s posted two in two seasons with injury issues derailing him for the most part.
In these two signings, the front office is clearly attempting to try two different avenues to fill the void at pass rusher - the first is a familiar guy who they know and expect at least solid play from. The second (Ray) is a high upside player who despite all his question marks, could prove to be a good gamble should he hit.
We’ll see how it all works out, but for now it seems that DeCosta isn’t resting on his laurels when it comes to roster building as the team heads into the summer.
