Giants news, 7/1: Antoine Bethea, Will Hernandez second year, Alex Tanney on Eli & Saquon

Let’s get your Fourth of July week started the right way

Good morning, New York Giants fans!

No comparison: Why Antoine Bethea signing is not Giants repeating Jonathan Stewart mistake - nj.com

Ryan Dunleavy writes:

Yes, the soon-to-be 35-year-old Bethea is the third-oldest player on the Giants, just like age was a concern with Stewart.

Yes, the Giants signed both players within the first two days of the free-agency period, perhaps jumping the market rather than getting the best possible price.

But Stewart was coming off a season in which he showed noticeable decline with the 2017 Panthers and had not played a full 16-game season since 2011.

Bethea played the fifth-most defensive snaps in the NFL last season when he missed four of a possible 1,115 for the Cardinals. Two years earlier, he played a team-high 1,127 out of a maximum 1,152 for the 49ers.

Valentine’s View: It comes down to this — Bethea is still a productive, every down player. Stewart was a used up running back brought in to be a part-time player and mentor for Saquon Barkley.

On Eli Manning handling the New York media:

“I’ve been around Eli for a little over a year now and I’ve never met anybody that’s better at handling those situations than he is. He is consistent day-in and day-out whether it’s a win or a loss. He ignores everything else and goes to work. That rubs off on the guys around him.”

On Saquon Barkley:

“Almost every day in practice he does something where you look to the guy next to you and go ‘Did you see that? I’m not sure I’ve seen that before.’ He’s one of the most athletic and talented players I’ve ever been around. At the same time he’s hard working and he cares about his teammates. He’s starting to build a leadership role.”

Connor Barwin wants to return to Philadelphia Eagles - NFL.com

Barwin might want that, but I suspect the Eagles are too smart to bite. He showed last season that there just isn’t much left in his tank.

Hernandez ready to take next step with O-line | Giants.com

Hernandez and new teammate Kevin Zeitler have already gained mutal respect.

“He’s been phenomenal, not only as a player but as a teacher, too,” Hernandez said. “He’s taught a lot of young guys, including myself, a lot of technique. He was one of the top pass protectors in the league last year, so he definitely has a lot to offer and he’s passing it on to the young guys, myself also, and we’re really glad to have him.”

Not only are Hernandez and Zeitler playing the same position, just on opposite sides, they are known as two of the strongest players in the weight room. When asked about his first impression of the young guard, Zeitler said he is “very, very strong” and thinks he can be “special.”

“He wants to work and he wants to get better every day,” Zeitler added. “I think that’s just the basis of someone who wants to be good in this league.”
