Falcons fantasy stud and dud from Week 2

NFL: Atlanta Falcons at Dallas Cowboys Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

Calvin Ridley has showed out twice in two weeks

I honestly don’t know what to say anymore.

Every single week you have to go into a Falcons game expecting a letdown, but this week they managed to reach a low that I wasn’t even expecting. Expect the worse, but then what happens when they do even worse than that?

The Falcons blew a 29-10 halftime lead in a game that made them the laughingstock of the NFL. There’s a lesson to be learned here — when Dan Quinn is your football team’s head coach no lead you have will ever be safe.

The Falcons lost a high scoring shootout, but the fantasy points flowed throughout the entire afternoon.

There is a lot of great content available here at the Falcoholic, and I encourage you to check it out if you want some in-depth analysis. This article will look at things strictly from a fantasy football perspective (that means looking at nothing other than purely statistics). Here is Atlanta’s fantasy stud and fantasy dud from Week 2’s defeat against the Dallas Cowboys.

Fantasy Stud/Dud 2020 History:

Past Studs: Calvin Ridley

Past Duds: Hayden Hurst

Fantasy Stud - Calvin Ridley

Stat Line - 7 catches, 109 receiving yards, 2 receiving touchdowns: 22.9 standard league points; 29.9 PPR points

Calvin Ridley continues to be a touchdown machine, and he may be breaking out in front of our very eyes. Two games into the season, Matt Ryan has thrown six touchdown passes and four of them have gone to Ridley — that makes 21 scores in 31 career games for the University of Alabama product. He currently leads the league in receiving scores.

The touchdowns make Ridley fantasy gold, but the yardage is what makes his start to the season even more encouraging. Ridley led the team in targets, receptions and overall receiving yards today. He has recorded 100+ receiving yards in two games out of two thus far — he only had three such games in his career coming into 2020.

The touchdowns are amazing, but he won’t score every game (well, if Ridley would like to take that statement as a challenge and prove me wrong I’d love that). The yardage enhances Ridley’s floor significantly and puts him in contention to be a top 10 fantasy WR this season if he can continue to rack it up.

Dud

Julio Jones - 2 catches, 24 receiving yards: 2.4 standard league points; 4.4 PPR points

This game was one to forget for Number 11. In fact, I don’t think it would be hyperbole to say that this was the worst game of the great Julio Jones’ Hall of Fame career.

The Falcons lit the Dallas defense up for 39 points, but Julio fantasy owners were left sick at the sight of his disappointing stat line. This was Jones’ lowest yardage total in a game since 2018.

Every year, Jones will put up one or two duds as a result of being an effective decoy. It’s just what you have to take along with his monster yardage games as a fantasy owner. Fighting a lingering hamstring injury, this was one of those games.

What makes this arguably the worst game of Jones’ career isn’t just the ineffective yardage — he’s had games with fewer yards in the past — it’s the inexcusable drop he had on a perfect Russell Gage pass which hit him in stride and should have been a touchdown to make the score 36-17.

The drop not only ended up being fatal to the Falcons in real life, but it also gave fantasy owners minimal output from a player drafted by many as a WR1.
