Justin Jackson expected to be inactive

NFL: Los Angeles Chargers at Cincinnati Bengals Joseph Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

It could mean more snaps for Joshua Kelley, but how many more?

The LA Chargers are expected to be without running back Justin Jackson against the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday according to a report by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Jackson was held to two carries and four yards on 11 snaps before exiting Week 1’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a quad injury.

With Jackson sidelined against the Bengals, Austin Ekeler and Joshua Kelley combined for 31 carries and 144 yards with a touchdown for Kelley. As Michael Peterson wrote this week, Kelley could be counted on for the “tough yards” by Anthony Lynn when the Chargers need a short yardage or goal line gain. Kelley had 12 carries for 60 yards in Week 1. In their two games against the Chiefs last season, Los Angeles gained 93 yards and 108 yards on the ground respectively.

Jackson accounted for 29 carries and 200 yards in seven games last season.

Despite his production, Kelley only played in 18 offensive snaps in Week 1. Austin Ekeler played in 74-percent of the snaps but may come out when the Chargers are near the goal line.
