Green Bay intends to fill its open roster spot with a second-year defensive tackle.
The Green Bay Packers have their man to fill the open 53rd spot on the active roster. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers will be signing free agent defensive tackle Daylon Mack on Thursday.
Mack was a fifth-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, and he played in one game last year before landing on injured reserve. He spent brief stints with the Lions and Giants during training camp this year, but New York released him at final cuts over the weekend.
At Texas A&M, Mack was a college teammate of Kingsley Keke, whom the Packers selected with the 150th pick in the 2019 draft. His selection came just ten picks before the Ravens drafted Mack at #160 overall. As seniors, the two combined for 13 sacks, with Keke recording 7.5 to Mack’s 5.5, and each player recorded at least ten tackles for losses.
At the 2019 Combine, Keke was the standout performer among the two, testing out much better at a svelte 6-foot-3 and 288 pounds. Mack appears to be a fit more as a run-stopping tackle, measuring in at 6-foot-1 and 336 pounds in Indianapolis a year ago and suggesting that he may be a better candidate to back up nose tackle Kenny Clark.
Still, although Mack does not stand out for his athletic testing, he at least appears to have a quick get-off from the line of scrimmage. Here’s a look at that jump in a rep from 2018, when he was matched up with current Packer Elgton Jenkins:

The Packers listed one of their five defensive linemen, Montravius Adams, as a limited participant on their first injury report Wednesday. Mack would appear to provide some insurance as a backup option for the time being.
This move will give the Packers the second-best defender named Mack in the NFC North.
