Robert Woods, Rams reportedly talking contract extension

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at Los Angeles Rams Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

There’s more money

LA Rams receiver Robert Woods was instrumental in helping the offense get down the field on their first drive and take a 7-0 lead over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night. Woods finished with six catches for 105 yards and continued his play as one of the most efficient and reliable threats at the position in the league. Accordingly, the Rams are reportedly not done tacking players to the bill as Jay Glazer said on Monday night that the two sides are working on an extension.

The Rams extended receiver Cooper Kupp for three years and $48 million on Saturday. Woods and Kupp are close to the same age and it would be surprising if he didn’t get something comparable, but the team has some leverage because he’s under contract for another year after this.

LA is paying him a bargain $5 million base salary this season and $9 million in 2021. His cap hit in 2021 will be $10.175 million once accounting for bonuses, and that leaves him making less than Brandin Cooks, Robby Anderson, Tyrell Williams, Jamison Crowder, DeVante Parker, DeSean Jackson, Golden Tate and Randall Cobb; the eight receivers ranked just ahead of him in 2021 salary.

Comparably speaking, Woods appears to me to have a higher 2021 ceiling than at least the majority of that group and with Kupp making $16 million in salary now, Woods should be near that. The Rams could also guarantee his 2021 salary and potentially work with that to reduce their overall cap hit next season, while locking him down for additional years after that.

Woods turns 29 next April.
