Here is the change, immediately reflected: the Eagles are copycatting the good stuff in the league, and rightfully so. But on those 10 dropbacks, the Eagles had three completions, three sacks, three incompletions, and a pick. They were bad on those plays, at -3.3 EPA overall. The sample size is tiny, but the film evidence is fairly compelling: the Eagles are still grafting the new approach into their playbook, and as such, the protections are imperfect; Wentz’s footwork is problematic. On the quick-hitting window throws to the intermediate level, there’s little time for a play-action fake and a rollout — but on the deeper shots, this is where moving Wentz’s launch point may be critical. Without it, things better get right fast in the Eagles’ protection calls and the quarterback’s drop discipline, or else Philadelphia will keep pursuing an offense for which they are ill-prepared, and reap the meager benefits of that hasty sowing.

Eagles rushing yards: 75.5 [...] Still, it’s hard to imagine the Eagles don’t run the ball more than they did a week ago (17 times) unless L.A. jumps out to a big lead and the Birds are forced to play catch-up. And with Sanders back, you have to think they do so with more success. The Rams allowed 136 rushing yards to Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys in their win over Dallas last week, but that was on just 27 carries (5.03 YPA). Pederson would be wise to try to get the ground game working against the Rams — and maybe try to run the ball the in the opposite direction of Aaron Donald. OVER.

The OL will have a huge challenge in trying to keep DL Aaron Donald under control. You aren’t going to shut him down. The goal has to be to limit his damage. I’ll be interested to see if they have him attack Seumalo or Herbig more. Herbig is the weaker player, but that’s kind of the point. Another DL could beat him. And Donald should win his share of battles vs Seumalo. The Rams will move Donald around. Eagles blockers must identify where he is. Wentz also needs to know where 99 is coming from. That will affect where he might need to move in the pocket. As Pederson talked about this week, improved protection is a group effort. Wentz can’t hold the ball as long. RBs need to do better at identifying blitzes and blocking rushers. TEs need to do their part when asked to pass protect. This isn’t all on the OL. But yeah, the OL must play better.

7. I honestly do not understand the Eagles’ approach to injuries. Why tell Eagles fans for a month that Lane Johnson is “day-to-day” when you know he has a serious injury that eventually required surgery and might miss the opener? Does it really give you a competitive advantage to pretend he’s OK when he’s not? Doug was asked on Aug. 29 if Lane was in jeopardy of missing the opener, and he said. “No, he’s fine. He’s still day-to-day.” What Pederson didn’t say is that Johnson either just had ankle surgery or was about to. Day-to-day? He missed a month. Maybe Pederson just likes playing games with the media, but the reality is it’s not about us, it’s about fans who pay a lot of money for tickets and gear and parking and deserve to know what’s going on with their football team.

Um, about all of that criticism this week? A lot from the outside was directed at Carson Wentz, who had three giveaways at Washington, who held the football too long (according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Wentz held the ball for four seconds or longer on seven of the eight sacks last week), and who just couldn’t pull the offense out of a rut after Washington turned the game around late in the first half. So, No. 11 has a large chore. The Eagles aren’t exactly in a “must-win” situation, but it would feel a whole lot better to be 1-1 on late Sunday afternoon. Wentz was so brilliant down the stretch last season in the 4-0 finish, throwing seven touchdowns without an interception. He needs to get back to that efficient, patient quarterback who plays within himself and who gets everyone involved in the offense.

Evan Engram had a bad game. It’s not the first bad game he’s had in four seasons. It won’t be the last of his career. It happens. I’m not making any more of it than that. As for Cameron Fleming, he wasn’t worse than anyone else on the line. Nick Gates, Will Hernandez and Kevin Zeitler weren’t good, either. They can’t all be replaced. This coaching staff has a lot of faith in Fleming. Judge saw him play well in New England. Jason Garrett and Marc Colombo had success with him in Dallas. The alternative to Fleming is Matt Peart, who every evaluator I spoke to over the last few months says is a guy who would really benefit from not being rushed into NFL action.
