The Linc - The Matt Pryor mystery

NFL: JAN 05 NFC Wild Card - Seahawks at Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 9/20/20.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Eagles mailbag: What happened to Matt Pryor? - PhillyVoice
7) The Eagles eventually paid Peters, and he went back to LT. In Week 1, Nate Herbig started at RG, and Jack Driscoll started at RT. During the game, Driscoll got hurt, and Jordan Mailata, who is more comfortable at LT than he is at RT, filled in. Pryor, who is more comfortable at RT than he is at LT, stayed on the bench. In other words, Pryor is, at best, the tenth lineman in the pecking order. He got leapfrogged by Herbig, Driscoll, and Mailata. [...] I think the answer is probably simple. Over the last few weeks, the Eagles came to the conclusion that Pryor just isn’t good. #Analysis.

The Eagles tried jumping on a budding offensive trend. It didn’t work. - BGN
Here is the change, immediately reflected: the Eagles are copycatting the good stuff in the league, and rightfully so. But on those 10 dropbacks, the Eagles had three completions, three sacks, three incompletions, and a pick. They were bad on those plays, at -3.3 EPA overall. The sample size is tiny, but the film evidence is fairly compelling: the Eagles are still grafting the new approach into their playbook, and as such, the protections are imperfect; Wentz’s footwork is problematic. On the quick-hitting window throws to the intermediate level, there’s little time for a play-action fake and a rollout — but on the deeper shots, this is where moving Wentz’s launch point may be critical. Without it, things better get right fast in the Eagles’ protection calls and the quarterback’s drop discipline, or else Philadelphia will keep pursuing an offense for which they are ill-prepared, and reap the meager benefits of that hasty sowing.

How to predict interceptions in the NFL - The Power Rank
Will Carson Wentz continue to prevent interceptions? The data suggests no. In 2019, 10.5% of his bad balls ended up as interceptions. This quantity shows strong regression to the mean, which implies that Wentz’s interception to bad ball rate will be closer to the NFL average of 21.3% in 2020. It is not likely Wentz will have an interception rate as low as 1.1% again like he did in 2019. He will be closer to the NFL average of 2.4%.

Five over/unders for Eagles’ Week 2 matchup against the Rams - PhillyVoice
Eagles rushing yards: 75.5 [...] Still, it’s hard to imagine the Eagles don’t run the ball more than they did a week ago (17 times) unless L.A. jumps out to a big lead and the Birds are forced to play catch-up. And with Sanders back, you have to think they do so with more success. The Rams allowed 136 rushing yards to Ezekiel Elliott, Dak Prescott and the Cowboys in their win over Dallas last week, but that was on just 27 carries (5.03 YPA). Pederson would be wise to try to get the ground game working against the Rams — and maybe try to run the ball the in the opposite direction of Aaron Donald. OVER.

Game Preview – LAR at PHI - Iggles Blitz
The OL will have a huge challenge in trying to keep DL Aaron Donald under control. You aren’t going to shut him down. The goal has to be to limit his damage. I’ll be interested to see if they have him attack Seumalo or Herbig more. Herbig is the weaker player, but that’s kind of the point. Another DL could beat him. And Donald should win his share of battles vs Seumalo. The Rams will move Donald around. Eagles blockers must identify where he is. Wentz also needs to know where 99 is coming from. That will affect where he might need to move in the pocket. As Pederson talked about this week, improved protection is a group effort. Wentz can’t hold the ball as long. RBs need to do better at identifying blitzes and blocking rushers. TEs need to do their part when asked to pass protect. This isn’t all on the OL. But yeah, the OL must play better.

What Zach Ertz needs to do, baffling Doug Pederson decisions in Roob’s observations - NBCSP
7. I honestly do not understand the Eagles’ approach to injuries. Why tell Eagles fans for a month that Lane Johnson is “day-to-day” when you know he has a serious injury that eventually required surgery and might miss the opener? Does it really give you a competitive advantage to pretend he’s OK when he’s not? Doug was asked on Aug. 29 if Lane was in jeopardy of missing the opener, and he said. “No, he’s fine. He’s still day-to-day.” What Pederson didn’t say is that Johnson either just had ankle surgery or was about to. Day-to-day? He missed a month. Maybe Pederson just likes playing games with the media, but the reality is it’s not about us, it’s about fans who pay a lot of money for tickets and gear and parking and deserve to know what’s going on with their football team.

A six-pack of things to watch as Eagles go for first win - PE.com
Um, about all of that criticism this week? A lot from the outside was directed at Carson Wentz, who had three giveaways at Washington, who held the football too long (according to the NFL’s Next Gen Stats, Wentz held the ball for four seconds or longer on seven of the eight sacks last week), and who just couldn’t pull the offense out of a rut after Washington turned the game around late in the first half. So, No. 11 has a large chore. The Eagles aren’t exactly in a “must-win” situation, but it would feel a whole lot better to be 1-1 on late Sunday afternoon. Wentz was so brilliant down the stretch last season in the 4-0 finish, throwing seven touchdowns without an interception. He needs to get back to that efficient, patient quarterback who plays within himself and who gets everyone involved in the offense.

Eagles-Rams cheat sheet: Lineup decisions, matchups to watch, predictions, more - The Athletic
Sheil Kapadia: The Eagles opened as 3.5-point favorites, dropped to underdogs and, as of now, are back to one-point favorites. Over the past five seasons, only the Packers defense had a bigger edge than the Eagles when playing at home versus on the road. But obviously, there will be no fans in the stands for this game. Rule No. 1 for making picks in Week 2: Don’t overreact to what happened in Week 1. The Rams were impressive in their win against the Cowboys, and the Donald montage that NBC showed in the second half had to be terrifying if you’re an Eagles offensive lineman. The Eagles, meanwhile, were one of the biggest Week 1 disappointments. Things balance out here between two pretty evenly matched teams. Eagles 24, Rams 23.

How Breonna Taylor’s killing spurs Eagles’ Jamon Brown to push for a ‘new world’ - ESPN
As a proud Black man fed up with social injustice and a native of Louisville, Kentucky, loyal to his hometown, Philadelphia Eagles offensive guard Jamon Brown has taken the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor to heart. “We’ve been out here marching and protesting for a cause, for a movement, for a change. But right now, I’m here to tell you — look around you. Literally, look around you. People say ‘One day,’ and I say ‘Day 1.’ ...Today in Louisville, Kentucky, we as a people have declared that we are all the same and that we as a people deserve the same justice. We deserve the same rights. We deserve the same opportunities of life.” Those were the words the 6-foot-4, 340-pound Brown shouted through a bullhorn as he addressed thousands of masked supporters congregated in downtown Louisville on June 6 — the day after what would have been Taylor’s 27th birthday.

Clutch Kicks, 1985-2019 - Football Outsiders
Do you want kickers who were actually perfect on clutch kicks? Jake Elliott of the Philadelphia Eagles is 9-for-9. So was former Chicago and Minnesota kicker Paul Edinger. Former Colts and Rams kicker Dean Biasucci was 8-for-8.

Bengals’ Auden Tate could seek trade amid limited role in Cincinnati offense to start 2020 - CBS Sports
Jackson doesn’t have immediate plans to request a trade but did not rule out the possibility. A separate NFL source speculated Friday that several teams would at least explore the availability of Tate, who’s under contract with Cincy through 2021, including the San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles.

Report: Cowboys hosting former player Ron Leary for a visit, potential offensive line depth - Blogging The Boys
While the holes seem to be at tackle, the Cowboys could field some different combinations of offensive linemen, although you don’t want to tinker too much for just a momentary thing. Dallas entered the season with safety regarded as their biggest point of weakness. They partly addressed this issue by signing someone, Brandon Carr, who last played for their team in 2016, and it seems like they might try that approach along the offensive line. They are hosting Ron Leary for a visit according to NFL Network.

Big Blue View mailbag, 9/19: Evan Engram, Trevor Lawrence, more questions - Big Blue View
Evan Engram had a bad game. It’s not the first bad game he’s had in four seasons. It won’t be the last of his career. It happens. I’m not making any more of it than that. As for Cameron Fleming, he wasn’t worse than anyone else on the line. Nick Gates, Will Hernandez and Kevin Zeitler weren’t good, either. They can’t all be replaced. This coaching staff has a lot of faith in Fleming. Judge saw him play well in New England. Jason Garrett and Marc Colombo had success with him in Dallas. The alternative to Fleming is Matt Peart, who every evaluator I spoke to over the last few months says is a guy who would really benefit from not being rushed into NFL action.

Steelers Injury Report: DeCastro, Wisniewski ruled out for Sunday vs. Broncos - Behind The Steel Curtain
UPDATE: The Steelers have placed Stefen Wisniewski on the Reserve/Injured List and promoted Derwin Gray to the active roster. Wisniewski must spend at least three weeks on the list before returning to the team.

Is it time for a change at the top for the Phillies? - The Good Phight
The current regime has overseen a rebuild that hasn’t rebuilt the Phillies into a true playoff contender. [BLG Note: Yes, it’s time.]

Sixers owners must clean house - 94WIP
Forget coaches, and trades, and arenas. Don’t be lulled to sleep with rumors about things that matter, but don’t matter the most. If the Sixers want to start to get back on track with any chance of a championship season, they’ll make the significant changes in the front office that they promised us a month ago. In this year’s version of deck chair moving on the basketball Titanic, the Sixers front office representatives, who are all still here, are deep within a flurry of leaks to local reporters to pin the blame of their disastrous season on each other in a slimy war of survival and stake claim on who the coach should be.
