Wednesday Open Thread: September 16, 2020

Vikings - Green Bay Packer football September 26,1999. — Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Chris Carter,80, breaks out of a tackle attempt by Packer defensive safety Leroy Butler, 36, during 1st quarter action at Lambeau Field Sunday September 26,1999.

We’re half-way through the week, getting further away from Sunday, thankfully

Merry Wednesday, everyone!

We’re slowly inching away from that brutal showing on Sunday. I just hope that the team shows up and puts together a solid performance against the Colts on Sunday, that will go a long way to assuage the doubts that are in many fans’ minds. Hey, I get it, it’s the first game of the year, and we have high hopes coming into the new season, then they come out and lay an egg. It’s natural to think the worst. Me? I go back to the reasons I thought they would be fairly strong this year, and I see that those pieces are all in place, so why would I let one game alter my opinion? That’s silly, IMO. (Don’t get me wrong, Sunday’s game still p***ed me off)

I go back to the 2015 season, since it’s recent. Coming in to that year, fans had high expectations. It was Zimmer’s second year, and in one year, he had transformed the defense from worst to above-average, and the team was improving. Fans were excited, and they had high hopes. Then, preseason game 6 happened (‘preseason game 6’ is an open thread euphemism, you’ll have to ask someone in the comments if you don’t know what I’m talking about). It was the late Monday Night game, and the Vikings got clobbered by the 49ers. To make it worse, we had to watch it while listening to Trent Dilfer screaming at us the entire game, his voice is still ringing in my ears. Yeah, the next day here was not pleasant. There were predictions of 2-14, and the same fans who were singing songs of praise to Zimmer on Sunday, were now calling for him to be fired just one day later. Because of one game. You’ll recall that the Vikings went on to finish 11-5, won the NFC North, and should have been in the divisional round of the playoffs (Damn you, Blair Walsh!). Point being, it was one game, it’ll be alright.

Around the DN since our last open thread:

From Chris, reports are hinting that the Vikings will be bringing back George Iloka.

Other Vikings/NFL news, and random oddities and annoyances:

From NFL.com, WR Mohamed Sanu is signing with the 49ers. You can add receivers, but if you don’t have someone to get them the ball, I’m not sure it will do any good. Also from NFL.com, Michael Thomas is expected to miss several weeks due to an ankle injury, and Le’Veon Bell has been place on IR with a hamstring injury.

We come to today’s media selection:

I love this guy’s music. If you like Western, you’ll love Chris LeDoux. He was a rarity, a country singer who was actually a real cowboy. He was a bronc rider on the pro circuit in his younger years (World Bareback Champ in 1976), and sold cassettes out of the trunk of his car. I actually got the opportunity to meet him back in 1993 after one of his concerts out in Monterey CA. He passed away far too early from cancer in 2005, at the age of 56. This is The Cowboy and the Hippie. Enjoy!

Again, we all know the rules, but in case someone is new:

-No discussion of politics or religion
-No feeding of the trolls
-Take the gender hatred elsewhere, it won’t be tolerated
-Keep the bad language to a minimum (using the spoiler tags, if you must)
-If discussing a newer show or movie, please use spoiler tags
-No pictures that could get someone fired or in serious trouble with their employer
-If you can’t disagree in a civil manner, feel free to go away
-While navigating the open thread, just assume it’s sarcasm.

With that, the beer light is on and the bar is open. Belly up & tie one on. Sorry about the smell, we watched the game in here Sunday, and we haven’t been able to get rid of the stink yet. It’s better than it was, you can tolerate sitting here for a half-hour without a respirator, although I wouldn’t recommend it.
