49ers set to bring in several quarterbacks for workouts, not Colin Kaepernick

It’s time for an open workout to consider veteran options.

The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo tore his ACL on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs. Spirits are down, but the team is already moving forward to figure out next steps.

C.J. Beathard takes over the starting quarterback, and head coach Kyle Shanahan said the team will promote Nick Mullens from the practice squad this week. However, the team is also going to work out several veterans on Tuesday. Shanahan said the team will bring in Tom Savage, Kellen Clemens, and T.J. Yates, and they had reached out to Matt Moore but had not heard back. Fooch’s update: Add in Landry Jones

Shanahan was asked if the team would consider bringing in Colin Kaepernick, and the coach said no they had not. He said they had looked at the situation last year and decided it was not a style fit. For the current situation, he said he wants to bring in players who would require less of a change in the offense.

The 49ers return to practice on Wednesday, at which point we’ll know if they plan on having a third veteran option at quarterback. The team has until Saturday to add a player, but if they are bringing in a quarterback that is not currently in the organization, they’ll get him in Wednesday to get up to speed on the playbook and with practice reps. The team can wait until Saturday to officially promote Nick Mullens, so one option would be signing a QB when they place Garoppolo on IR, and then deciding if Mullens makes more sense — in which case, they can release the recently signed QB.

All this is to say, we’ll find out more on Wednesday.
