Aaron Rodgers named FedEx Air Player of the Week after 400-yard day against 49ers

Until this week, Rodgers had gone nearly a season and a half without earning this weekly honor.

In the past two weeks, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has recorded two of his three highest single-game passing yardage totals in his NFL career. Monday night’s 425-yard performance came eight days after he threw for 442 yards in a loss to the Detroit Lions; meanwhile, both of those games come in behind a 480-yard day he put up against Washington in 2013.

Unlike the game in Detroit, however, Monday’s game came with a notch in the win column, as Rodgers’ efforts helped the Packers come back in the fourth quarter for a 33-30 victory. On Thursday, the NFL named Rodgers the FedEx Air Player of the Week for week six, joining Ground Player of the Week Todd Gurley. In total, Rodgers completed 25 of 46 passes for those 425 yards, throwing a pair of touchdowns and no interceptions.

(Note that another ball thrown by Rodgers ended in a touchdown, but because his pass to Ty Montgomery was ruled to be a lateral, it went in the stat sheet as a rushing attempt instead of a pass.)

Gurley also won the NFC’s award for Offensive Player of the week, edging out Rodgers thanks to 208 yards and two touchdowns on the ground plus a pair of receptions for 17 yards.

This was Rodgers’ second nomination for this award this year, as he was also up for the honor after the Packers’ comeback on Sunday Night Football in week one. However, he came up short in the voting for that game, as the BuccaneersRyan Fitzpatrick won out with over 400 yards and four touchdown passes. According to our research, the last time Rodgers won this award was in week 16 of the 2016 season, when he threw for 347 yards and four touchdowns in a 38-25 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Eve.
