Dede Westbrook defends touchdown celebration

The Jacksonville Jaguars were beaten by the Dallas Cowboys by a score of 40-7 yesterday at AT&T Stadium, not scoring a single point until the third quarter.

Down 24-0 after halftime, Blake Bortles and Dede Westbrook connected on a 34-yard touchdown and Westbrook celebrated with the help of Keelan Cole and some other receivers.

Westbrook, however, caught some flak for the celebration. Fans didn’t think a team down 24-7 late in the game should be celebrating. To his credit, Westbrook responded with a tweet on Monday morning.

“So, apparently I’m getting a lot of heat for celebrating when my team is down? Let’s be clear, I love this game, so every time I’m on the field I’m going to have fun and enjoy myself doing what I’m PASSIONATE about doing. It’s extremely difficult to score in this league, so I will celebrate when myself or any of my teammates do so. EVERY SINGLE TIME. Period.”

Personally, I get it, and I don’t hold it against Westbrook to celebrate an NFL touchdown whether you’re up or down 17 points.

What do you think? Should NFL players tone themselves down depending on the score, or should NFL players be able to celebrate individual accomplishments regardless of how the score looks?
