When the Jacksonville Jaguars take the field against the Houston Texans on Sunday at TIAA Bank Field, it could be with a certain running back they have been without for the past couple of weeks. Leonard Fournette seems to be inching his way back to the lineup and will be evaluated as the week goes on.
“The only thing I am sharing with you is they [Leonard Fournette and DJ Hayden] ran today and obviously it went well and we are going to see where we are at Wednesday,” Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said in his Monday press conference.
While it’s nice to hear Fournette is running this early in the week, it would probably be a mistake to trot him out there on Sunday against the Texans. Even when Fournette returns, he’s not going to be 100 percent healthy and I think the risk of what happened against the New York Jets happening again is very high.
If the Jaguars trot him out there on Sunday, in my opinion it will look like a desperation move to try to spark something on the offense. In reality, Fournette isn’t really going to transform anything on your offense right now. It’s not like they’re struggling in short yardage or on the goal line. In fact, back up TJ Yeldon has had a nose for the endzone in Fournette’s absence.
The team should wait until after the bye week to roll Fournette back into the offense, but after reeling with two straight losses where the offense was shutout in the first half of both games, it’s not a huge surprise they’re in desperation mode.
