Lions’ WR Andy Jones returns to practice, remains on PUP

Jones will finally see the practice field for the first time in 2018.

The Detroit Lions announced Wednesday morning that receiver Andy Jones will return to practice this week after missing all of training camp and the first six weeks of the season. The team placed Jones on the Physically Unable to Perform list back in July with an undisclosed injury, and he remained on the PUP list into the regular season, making him ineligible to play for the first six weeks of the season.

Now that the six weeks are up, Jones will return to practice. However, he remains on the PUP list. The Lions now have 21 days to decide what to do with Jones. In that timespan, they can activate him to the 53-man roster, waive him or place him on injured reserve for the rest of the season.

As for what Jones brings to the table, the 24-year-old receiver played a handful of special teams snaps for the Lions in the final two games of the 2017 season. Detroit’s special teams units have struggled in 2018, so if Jones can shine over the next couple weeks of practice, there’s a small chance he could see the 53-man roster, especially if he can show more value than the team’s current No. 5 receiver, Brandon Powell, who has been inactive for all five games this season. However, unless the injury bug hits the Lions’ wide receivers, don’t expect to see much of Andy Jones this year.
