Giants lose again.
The more things change, the more things stay the same. Again the New York Giants’ offense failed to show up in a 20-13 loss to the Washington Redskins. The loss drops the Giants to 1-7 while the win brings the NFC East-leading Redskins to 5-2.
In the first game after a few trades and roster moves, the Giants defense played relatively well. There were some stumbles, but the unit limited the Washington offense and kept the score close until late in the game.
Meanwhile the offense was again anemic as Eli Manning was sacked seven times in addition to throwing two interceptions.
Saquon Barkley again had a bigger impact as a receiver (73 yards on nine receptions) than as a runner (38 yards on 13 carries). He again surpassed 100 yards from, scrimmage, his seventh-time this season. Odell Beckham added a big play or two — 136 yards on eight receptions — but he wasn’t always the focal point of the offense when it mattered. The offense couldn’t move the ball consistently and faltered in the red zone until a meaningless score at the end of the game — a two-yard touchdown to Evan Engram with 17 seconds remaining.
Moments that mattered
The scoring for the game opened with a seven-yard touchdown reception from Adrian Peterson with a broken tackle along the way.
Peterson touchdown catch - Smith wanted to work the trips side, all out-breaking routes. Nothing there, quickly worked back to Peterson on the checkdown. Peterson does the rest #Redskins pic.twitter.com/ogngPwt0rU

Later in the second quarter, the Giants had a chance to tie the game, but Eli Manning threw an interception after not seeing safety D.J. Swearinger stay with Odell Beckham.
Another angle of the Swearinger INT. #Giants run the dusty concept (double unders outside, corner from the inside). Nice pass off and adjustment. #Redskins pic.twitter.com/kdsLaIfwNQ

Missed opportunities: The interception was a killer inside the red zone and the Giants got back late in the fourth quarter, but failed to score a touchdown from the 3-yard line. Instead of aggressively going for it and trying to get the game within a field goal, the Giants kicked and stayed down by a touchdown. It turned into another touchdown when Adrian Peterson ran for a 64-yard touchdown on the next drive.
Line problems: The offensive line was again a problem despite the changes in the lineup. Manning was sacked seven times, though not all were on the line. Some were due to bad route combinations downfield, some were due to poor pocket presence of the quarterback. Still, there were little signs of optimism for this line going forward for the rest of the season.
Injury news: Chad Wheeler left the game with an ankle injury and did not return. He was replaced by Brian Mihalik at right tackle. The severity of the injury is unknown.
What’s next?
The trade deadline is Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET, so if there will be any more trades, they will be done by that time.
The Giants have a bye in Week 9 and that could be a time the team starts to consider some more changes to the lineup. They’ll even have an extra day with the next game coming on Monday Night Football in Week 11 against the San Francisco 49ers.
