The new Lions nose tackle has a chance to break an odd NFL record.
Now that Damon Harrison Sr. has been traded to the Detroit Lions, he has 10 more regular season games to play. That’s notable because the New York Giants have already played in seven. You don’t have to be a math major to deduce that if Harrison stays healthy and plays immediately for Detroit, he could be one of the few players in NFL history to play 17 games in a season.
Ever since the league expanded to a 16-game schedule, seven players have participated in 17 games, per Pro Football Reference. The most recent player to do it was defensive back Will Allen, who played five games with the Cowboys before being traded and playing the final 12 games with the Steelers.
However, Harrison has an opportunity to do something that none of those seven players ever did: start all 17 games.
Harrison is currently riding a 87-game starting streak, but that could be in jeopardy this week. Although all signs are pointing to “Snacks” playing against the Seahawks—he practiced on Thursday with the team—there is no guarantee he’ll immediately become a starter. Of course, a player simply needs to play in the very first snap of the game to be considered a starter, so Matt Patricia may throw him a bone just to keep that record alive.
Should he do so, Harrison has a chance to put his name in the record books in one of the odder loopholes of the league. Starting 17 games in a season is one of those weird facts that could be a neat feather in the cap of Harrison’s already impressive career.
