Snap count observations: Lions waste no time easing Damon Harrison in

“Snacks” played more snaps than he had in five games.

Here are the snap counts for the Detroit Lions’ Week 8 loss to the Seattle Seahawks:

Observations:

• With Theo Riddick out for another week, and the Lions abandoning the run pretty early, it was Kerryon Johnson who took over as the team’s third-down back, essentially making him the bell-cow back that every fan has been asking for. This will likely change when Theo returns, but it’s interesting to see Johnson carry the bulk of snaps, while LeGarrette Blount was essentially used as a situational back.
• Some weird things along the offensive line. Again, the Lions gave Lang a drive or two off for no apparent reason. Additionally, at the end of the game Tyrell Crosby came in for Taylor Decker. The team didn’t announce an injury, so it’s unclear why the Lions made the change at left tackle.
• In place of TJ Jones, Brandon Powell played in just one offensive snap, and took over on special teams.

Observations:

• It may not have seemed like it, but Detroit did not ease “Snacks” into the game. He played 62 percent of the snaps, which is a higher percentage than he got in New York over the past five games. He also played with some special teams units, meaning he’s in the thick of it now.
• Here’s one of the more curious personnel decisions: Despite going up against a run-first offense, the Lions played Tavon Wilson—one of their better run defenders in the secondary—for just eight snaps.
• Despite having Harrison to eat up some snaps, both Da’Shawn Hand and Romeo Okwara actually saw their playing time increase a little this week. Okwara’s 87 percent participation rate is the fourth-highest of his career.
