The Linc - Ronald Darby named to NFL Team of the Week

Philadelphia Eagles news and links for 10/17/18.

Let’s get to the Philadelphia Eagles links ...

Week 6 NFL Team of the Week - PFF
Ronald Darby, Philadelphia Eagles – 92.2. Darby was targeted six times by Eli Manning in the Eagles win over the Giants on Thursday Night Football but allowed just one reception for no yards whatsoever. Showcasing his ability to make plays on the ball, Darby finished the game with four pass breakups to boot.

Eagles have done very well in games officiated by the referee for Sunday’s Panthers matchup - BGN
The Philadelphia Eagles have a few notable advantages heading into their Week 7 game against the Carolina Panthers. The rest difference is one of them. The Eagles last played on Thursday, October 11 while the Panthers played on Sunday, October 14. Home field advantage is also significant with the Eagles winning 17 out of their last 20 meaningful games at Lincoln Financial Field. And then there’s another factor that certainly wasn’t working in the Eagles’ favor during last year’s game against the Panthers: officiating.

Kist & Solak Show #28: Previewing Eagles O vs Panthers D, Bonus Outtake - BGN Radio
Michael Kist and Benjamin Solak get you up to date on all the visits and roster moves and then hit preview 1 of 2 by digging into the details of the Eagles offense against the Panthers defense. What concepts can the Eagles use successfully against the Panthers? What matchups should we be eyeing? PLUS a bonus outtake because Michael can’t talk.

Isaac Seumalo was good against the Giants, with video analysis and stuff - PhillyVoice
In pass protection, Seumalo did not allow any sacks or quarterback hits on the night, and I had him down for a pair of pressures allowed. In the run game, Seumalo showed off his awareness, agility, and improved strength. Here is a video of some plays that stood out to me, good and bad. To note, we could also just show the times Seumalo provided good pass protection, but that would make for a pretty boring video, so you’ll just have to trust me that he was mostly very good there Thursday night.

Minor Moves - Iggles Blitz
Avonte Maddox is needed at FS to replace Rodney McLeod. He is also needed in the slot to replace Sidney Jones. Maddox is a good young player, but he can’t be in two spots at once so the Eagles have a decision to make. They can play Maddox at FS in the base and then move him down to the slot in 3 and 4-receiver sets. Rasul Douglas could then slide into the FS spot in those looks. The Eagles could put Douglas at LCB and move Jalen Mills to the slot, leaving Maddox to play only FS. McDougle now gives the coaches another option. He could play in the slot, leaving Maddox to play FS and Douglas to be the top backup CB. McDougle was with the Lions this summer, but hasn’t played this year. He is at his best in the slot and does have experience in this scheme.

Best and worst QBs of Week 6: Wentz, Dak star ... Eli doesn’t - ESPN
After back-to-back middling weeks in which the Eagles went 0-2, Wentz responded with a career-best 95.9 Total QBR in Week 6 against the Giants. No matter how you evaluate his effort, he looked great. The most important aspect was avoiding negative plays, however. Wentz was sacked only once and had positive expected points added on 30 of his 42 action plays (71 percent), the highest rate of his career. Wentz also was an incredible 13-of-14 on third down with nine of those 13 completions going for a first down. Of quarterbacks who attempted at least 14 third-down attempts, none has a completion rate that high since Kyle Orton matched Wentz’s 13-for-14 performance in Week 14 of 2014.

Carson Wentz On Star Rise Again At QB - PE.com
We’re four games into the new beginning of Carson Wentz, Franchise Quarterback, and it’s safe to say that the production is impressive. Wentz has thrown eight touchdown passes and only one interception. He’s completed 68.4 percent of his passes, by far the highest number in his career. The timing is there, the football IQ has only grown greater, and the mobility has been as good as ever. Wentz is back in full flight, and if anyone needed convincing his first touchdown pass in Thursday night’s win over the New York Giants was the ticket. On a third-and-7 play from the New York 13-yard line, Wentz escaped the pocket and rolled right and as he approached the sideline Wentz threw back across his body into the middle of the back of the end zone, completing a touchdown pass to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. It was amazing.

All-22: How the Eagles borrowed from the Patriots and bottled up Beckham in win over the Giants - The Athletic
“And again, something like that, yes we saw the Patriots score on that specific play. We run similar concepts throughout. So if you go back to even, I was thinking about that, I think it was Detroit in 2016, we scored a touchdown to Josh Huff. It was a two-man version of the similar concept. So it’s a play we have in our offense. We really liked the way they dressed it up with the bunch and motion into it and throw it there so yes, we replicated the way they did it but it’s not like we were grabbing something that’s not even in our system. We’ll take ideas from all over. If we see good ideas throughout the league or throughout college football on a Saturday, then we’re gonna talk about it. But ultimately we’re gonna make sure that it fits our identity, it fits our personnel and fits what wef’re trying to do in the area that we call it.”

What convinced the Eagles that Avonte Maddox could play safety - NBCSP
“We took Rodney out of the picture and talked about it as a staff and Avonte gave us the best replacement for Rodney. Kind of the same body type, speed, change of direction. Avonte’s tough, now. I think that position of free safety kind of gets overlooked sometimes, like, ‘Oh, the guy’s just standing back there in the back part of the field.’ But the ball comes ripping through there. (You have to be able to) get the guy on the ground, and we all felt more than comfortable with Avonte in that role, being able to get people on the ground. He’s got great range, he’s fast, really, really smart back there, he’s got great awareness. Some of the things he’s done the last two weeks it’s been like, ‘Wow.’ He’s stepped in there without hesitation.”

LeSean McCoy Accusers Suing NFL Star For More Than $13 Million - TMZ Sports
The women who claim they were violently attacked during a home invasion allegedly orchestrated by LeSean McCoy are suing the Buffalo Bills star for more than $13 million, TMZ Sports has learned. McCoy’s ex-girlfriend, Delicia Cordon, is demanding at least $10 million and her friend, Elizabeth Donald, is asking for at least $3.5 million for damages suffered in the July 10 incident.

It’s Time to Get Used to the Weird, Unpredictable, High-Scoring NFL - The Ringer
Scoring is up. Scoring margins are down. The Cowboys can look lost on offense one week, and then hang 40 on the best defense in the league the next. This version of pro football is here to stay.

John Mara: “Little more playing and a little less talking” from Odell Beckham - Big Blue View
The owner obviously isn’t happy with a player he just handed a $95 million contract. The player doesn’t appear happy with the situation he signed up for, though he’s certainly happy with the money. The head coach who went out of his way to build a rapport with Beckham has made it apparent that he feels burned by the wide receiver. None of this is good. No matter what side you’re on. Reality is, the idea that there are sides to choose is a big part of the problem.

The Hog Molly Report: Panthers at Washington - Cat Scratch Reader
However, the real problem on this defense right now is stopping the run, reflected by our bottom ten ranking in yards per carry. This is very unusual for a Carolina defense, and right now it seems to be breaking everything. We just made Adrian Peterson look about five years younger, and if we had more success our offense probably would have had a few more drives and pulled this game out. Julius Peppers has not been holding up his end of the bargain in this part of the game, and despite his first sack of the season, it’s clear that we must invest in the defensive end position early next year in the draft.

2019 NFL Mock Draft 1.0: Giants Take QB No. 1 in First Projections - SI
15. Philadelphia: Deandre Baker, CB, Georgia. Baker decided to come back for his senior year and the decision has paid off. He already has two picks on the season and he’d have a chance to compete for a starting job as a rookie in a place like Philadelphia.

Week 6 DVOA Ratings - Football Outsiders
In close games, DVOA doesn’t look at wins and losses, which is how the Chiefs can take over the No. 1 spot from the Rams despite a close loss. The secret: strength of schedule and special teams. Plus, more of a look at the incredibly bad Buffalo offense and the surprisingly good Buffalo defense.

NFL Power Rankings Week 7, 2018: The Patriots are laughing their way to the top - SB Nation
The Eagles beat the Giants to kick off Week 6, but it seemed like New York lost more than Philadelphia won. Still, a win’s a win and Carson Wentz is doing well in his return from ACL surgery.
