TNF Game Thread: Dolphins and Texans battle for AFC positioning

A pair of 4-3 teams meet on Thursday to see who can start to cement themselves as real contenders in the AFC.

A pair of AFC teams square off this evening on Thursday Night Football, as the Dolphins and Texans meet to jockey for position in the playoff race. Both teams are sitting with matching 4-3 records at present, with Houston holding a one-game lead in the AFC South. The Dolphins sit a game back of the Patriots in the AFC East division, however, and are in a three-way tie with the Bengals and Ravens for the effective sixth spot in the conference.

While Houston has quarterback DeShaun Watson relatively healthy, Miami’s Ryan Tannehill has missed the past two games and will be out again tonight. That means that Brock Osweiler gets his third straight start, but he will be missing two of the Fins’ top receiving threats; Albert Wilson and Kenny Stills are both out for tonight’s game, leaving Danny Amendola and Jakeem Grant to try to pick up the slack.

These two teams have met eight times in their histories, with Houston winning each of the first seven games. The last contest was back in 2015 and was the second game for the Dolphins after Joe Philbin was fired as head coach; Miami won to improve to 3-3 and drop the Texans to 2-5. However, the teams went in opposite directions afterwards, as the Dolphins finished that year 6-10 and the Texans won seven of their last nine to win the South division at 9-7. Also fun is the fact that Texans running back Lamar Miller started for the Dolphins in the teams’ last meeting.

Tune in tonight to see who improves to 5-3 on the year.
