Who is the NFL’s best young quarterback? Survey says: Patrick Mahomes

SB Nation’s surveys say that the Chiefs’ QB is the best young signal-caller in the league. Meanwhile, Packers’ fan confidence stays relatively flat.

The NFL continues to be a passing league that prioritizes protecting quarterbacks above all else, the importance of having a top QB has never been greater. This year, there are plenty of young QBs early on their careers who are impressing around the league, and SB Nation decided to ask readers of all the network’s NFL team brands about which is their favorite.

Four names showed up on this week’s FanPulse poll about which young quarterback you would rather have for the next decade. Here they are, along with their draft year and position and their 2018 stats (note that Wentz missed the Eagles’ first two games of this season).

  • Jared Goff, Rams — 1st pick, 2016; 134-194, 1,928 yards, 12 TDs, 5 INTs; 17 carries, 51 yards
  • Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs — 10th pick, 2017; 135-212, 1,865 yards, 18 TDs, 4 INTs; 24 carries, 75 yards, 2 TDs
  • DeShaun Watson, Texans — 12th pick, 2017; 140-217, 1,798 yards, 9 TDs, 7 INTs; 36 carries, 203 yards, 1 TD
  • Carson Wentz, Eagles — 2nd pick, 2016; 108-158, 1,192 yards, 8 TDs, 1 INT; 12 carries, 58 yards

(It’s a good thing that they included the qualifier “Young” in this question. With Aaron Rodgers previously stating that he would like to play well into his 40s, Packers fans might have thrown a fit if 34-year-old had been excluded.)

Check out the results here. It should come as little surprise that Mahomes leads the way in this voting, given the success he has had in his first seven games as a starter and his team’s 5-1 record so far. Last year at this time, the leader would certainly have been one of the other three players, as Mahomes was sitting behind Alex Smith in Kansas City. But since taking over, the former Texas Tech Red Raider has been electric, throwing for over 300 yards in five straight games and tossing three or more touchdowns in four contests this year.

Meanwhile, Goff leads the 6-0 Rams, but he is overshadowed on his own offense by running back Todd Gurley. Personally, he would be my second choice though, particularly in a package deal with head coach Sean McVay. Wentz’s image across the NFL may have been lessened somewhat by the fact that his backup, Nick Foles, led the Eagles to a Super Bowl title after Wentz was injured, while Watson is coming off a torn ACL and has yet to reach the pre-injury heights during his rookie year.

We were also able to look at Packers fans’ responses to this question. Out of an even 100 responses, 79 went for Mahomes, with Wentz getting 11 votes, Goff six, and “other” landing four.

Packers Confidence

As for a Packers-specific survey question, we find Green Bay fans’ confidence staying essentially steady after a week of practice leading up to their Monday night win over the 49ers. There was a slight increase in overall confidence index from 30% to 34%, but little change was expected as surveys are sent out on Monday and prior to the team’s thrilling comeback victory. Next week’s survey following the bye week should be a better indication of fans’ reactions to that game and how APC readers feel leading up to the team’s toughest stretch in 2018.

Here’s a look at how the index tracks for the Packers as well as for the other teams in the NFC North. In short, all four teams stayed pretty steady from week five to week six.
