Who ever would have thought that losing Derek Anderson would make the depth chart look this bad?
Most of the Buffalo Bills’ inactive players were predetermined by injuries this week, as the team had ruled out four players from today’s game against the Chicago Bears. Now that the whole list is out, there are not many surprises on it for either team.
Buffalo will start Nathan Peterman at quarterback, as the team is down two starters at the position, and they will also have a first-time starter at middle linebacker thanks to the concussion that Tremaine Edmunds suffered in the first half of Monday’s 25-6 loss against the New England Patriots. Here is Buffalo’s full inactive list.
QB Josh Allen
QB Derek Anderson
As we mentioned above, Peterman draws the start through attrition, as neither Allen (elbow) nor Anderson (concussion) is healthy enough to suit up today. Matt Barkley, who signed with the Bills just this week, will serve as the backup. Presumably, the emergency quarterback is tight end Logan Thomas, who has not played quarterback since 2014. During that season, he only threw 9 passes, and only 1 of those passes was complete—but it went for an 81-yard touchdown.
OT Ike Boettger
OT Conor McDermott
After a trend of leaving three offensive linemen inactive, the Bills only leave two. Wyatt Teller is active today along with backups Jeremiah Sirles and Ryan Groy. Might we see some changes along the interior front?
WR Cam Phillips
Buffalo will go with five receivers, as newly-acquired Terrelle Pryor will appear over the undrafted rookie.
DE Trent Murphy
Buffalo’s starter at left defensive end will miss his second consecutive start due to a knee injury. Shaq Lawson will start in his place, and Eddie Yarbrough will see more snaps as a result. Linebacker Lorenzo Alexander shifted down to defensive end in clear passing situations against the Patriots, and I expect that will happen again today to help cover for Murphy’s absence.
LB Tremaine Edmunds
Buffalo’s second first-round pick is out with a concussion today, meaning that veteran Julian Stanford should draw the start in his place. Stanford is known mostly for his work on special teams, and he isn’t nearly the player in coverage that Edmunds is, so this is a huge blow to Buffalo defensively.
