Nate Peterman has the worst luck in NFL history.
The Buffalo Bills are completely shell-shocked, trailing the Chicago Bears 28-0 after two quarters of football. The Bills lost three turnovers in the second quarter, two that were returned for touchdowns, and the offense looks afraid to move the ball beyond the line of scrimmage as the first half comes to a close. The Bills have now been outscored 91-11 in the last ten quarters of the season. Even if you added up all of Buffalo’s points in the last 15 quarters, it wouldn’t be enough to take the lead in this game.
Both teams traded punts in the scoreless first quarter, between solid defense and self-inflicted wounds. On Chicago’s opening drive, the Bills sacked Mitch Trubisky and forced a fumble on third down to take away the chance for a field goal. With Nate Peterman under center, the Bills found a first down with a quick pass to LeSean McCoy, but the drive sputtered shortly thereafter. Buffalo’s second drive was a three and out, as bad blocking left no room for McCoy to run.
A the start of the second quarter, the Bills thought they had Chicago’s offense on the ropes, with a 3rd and 15 play outside of field goal range. But Trubisky found Trey Burton on a deep crossing route to extend the drive into the red zone. A few plays later, Jordan Howard punched the ball into the end zone from the one yard line. 7-0 Bears.
A 26 yard crossing route to Jason Croom gave Buffalo a chance in Chicago territory on their next possession. But Aaron Lynch, unblocked, tackled McCoy for a loss, and Peterman couldn’t hook up with a receiver to salvage any points from their drive.
The Bills forced a three-and-out from Chicago and started their next drive in Bears territory. For their best chance of the day, Peterman found Benjamin on a sail concept to put the team into field goal range. The Bills got one yard on two runs and were clearly aiming for a “don’t screw this up” field goal setup with a short third down pass, but Bears safety Eddie Jackson forced a fumble that the Bears returned all the way to the end zone to give Chicago a 14-0 lead.
Buffalo started their next drive with a worthless direct snap to Terrelle Pryor. On the next snap, Peterman’s black magic continued dragging Buffalo’s snakebitten offense into the dirt. He hit Pryor on a dig route, but Pryor bobbled the ball. It blooped right into the hands of Adrian Amos, giving the Bears their second turnover of the day. On Buffalo’s next drive, Peterman tried finding Zay Jones at the line of scrimmage, but Kyle Fuller legally bumped Jones to knock him off-balance, and the pass became a pick-six, Buffalo’s third turnover of the second quarter.
The Bills punted deep in their own territory, and Tarik Cohen returned it on a winding, loopy run all the way to Buffalo’s 21 yard line. Chicago punched it in a few plays later with Jordan Howard finding his second touchdown of the day.
The Bills aren’t necessarily lacking in attempts to fix their broken offense. Already, Jeremiah Sirles and Wyatt Teller have taken reps from Jordan Mills and Vlad Ducasse, respectively, on the offensive line. The new signing Pryor’s been worked into the game. The issue is just that their offense has no talent or skill.
LeSean McCoy was replaced in the lineup by Marcus Murphy in the second quarter. It’s not clear if he has an injury or the coaches were just experimenting with reps.
