One Stat Recap: Bills tallied 31 first-half points

Buffalo’s offense explodes in the first half

The Buffalo Bills routed the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium (which is in New Jersey). The Bills hung 41 points on the Jets’ defense who was ranked seventh overall by Football Outsiders before Sunday’s blowout. The 41 points are impressive, but what’s even more impressive is that Matt Barkley and the Bills offense scored 31 of them in the first half.

The offense wasted no time getting the scoring bonanza going. Barkley hit Robert Foster on a 47-yard bomb on the Bills’ first play and LeSean McCoy followed that up with a 28-yard off-tackle run to the end zone. Buffalo’s offense continued to roll throughout the first half, scoring points on all but one of their first half possessions. At halftime the Bills had put up 31 points on the Jets, making it the first time in almost exactly 10 years that the Bills have scored 30 or more points in the first half. The last 30-point first half came when Trent Edwards led the Bills over Tyler Thigpen and the Kansas City Chiefs in November 2008.

The 30 first half points also nearly guaranteed the Bills a victory. Only eight teams in NFL history have lost a game after scoring more than 30 points in the first half. More than 400 teams held onto their first half leads. The last team to lose after scoring 30 or more in the first half was the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010, who lost to the Bills in the infamous Stevie Johnson “Why so serious?” game.
