Sean McDermott: Josh Allen to start when healthy

Rookie QB to start if all goes well with recovery from elbow sprain

The Buffalo Bills (3-7) enter their bye week with some confidence following Sunday’s 41-10 dismantling of the New York Jets.

One day after Matt Barkley directed the offense to a season-high in points — Buffalo nearly matched its scoring output from its last four games (33) in a 31-point first half — head coach Sean McDermott wasted little time in clarifying who will quarterback the Bills against the Jacksonville Jaguars (3-6) in a Week 12 showdown Nov. 25 at New Era Field.

Assuming he is healthy, McDermott proclaimed during Monday’s press conference that prized rookie QB Josh Allen, who has been sidelined since the second half of a Week 6 loss to the Houston Texans, would start vs. Jacksonville.

“Josh is our starter when he’s healthy,” McDermott told members of the media. “His development is important for him and important for us as we move forward. … It’s important that he gets as many reps as he can get in live game action.”

The Bills are coming off a win over the Jets where Buffalo ran for 212 yards (LeSean McCoy ran for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries), passed for 239 yards, and amassed 451 total yards of offense.

Barkley, in his first action since the 2016 season finale when he was with the Chicago Bears, completed 15 of 25 passes for 232 yards, two TDs, and more importantly zero interceptions. Before Week 10’s turnover-free effort, Buffalo’s quarterbacks had thrown as many pick-sixes (three) as passing touchdowns.
