Report: Ravens’ Joe Flacco is dealing with a hip injury, status for Week 11 up in the air

The Baltimore Ravens suffered a heartbreaking 23-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 9. In the first quarter of that game, Flacco appeared to have sustained a reported hip injury. He continued to play through the apparent injury, but the Athletic’s Jeff Zrebiec is reporting that Flacco’s status for Week 11 is uncertain.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport is also reporting that Flacco is “having tests to determine the severity” of this reported hip injury.

Fortunately for the Ravens and Joe Flacco, they have their bye this week. Baltimore’s next game is not until November 18th, which could give Lamar Jackson more time to practice with the starters if he has to start while also giving Flacco more time to recover. The decision on which quarterback will be the starter will be solely based on Flacco’s health.

Despite struggling in the past three games, Flacco is on pace to have one of his best seasons statistically. He currently is on pace to finish the season with approximately 4,382 yards, which would mark the second time in his career that he has surpassed the 4,000 yard feat in a single season. Flacco has also thrown 12 touchdowns to six interceptions.

Although Flacco’s stats would suggest that he is having one of the best seasons of his 11-year career, the Ravens’ offense has struggled with consistency for much of the year. They started the season red-hot as they were a historical 13-for-13 in the red zone at one point, but since then they have not had a ton of success in that area. Against the Steelers in Week 9, Baltimore finished one-for-four in the red zone.

The Ravens will return to the practice field next week, and the biggest question will be Flacco’s participation levels.

If Flacco is unable to play, this would mark the seventh regular season of his career that he did not start for the Ravens since 2008. It would also be Lamar Jackson’s first NFL start. Jackson has only attempted 12 passes this season while completing 7 of them for 87 yards and a touchdown. He has also amassed 139 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Regardless of who the starting quarterback will be in Week 11, Baltimore’s offense desperately needs to find consistency. With a terrible 1-3 record in the AFC North and an overall record of 4-5, the Ravens desperately need to hit the ground running after their bye week.
