49ers to place Pierre Garçon on injured reserve

This ends his 2018 season and is the second time in as many years injuries have kept him from playing a full season.

The San Francisco 49ers plan to place wide receiver Pierre Garçon on injured reserve.

In his press conference Monday where he broke the news, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said the IR-designation is due to a knee injury. Garçon will now need to get it scoped. The placement on IR ends Garçon’s season.

Years One and Two with the San Francisco 49ers have now led to Garçon being placed on IR. In 2017 it was due to a neck injury. There was a lot of optimism for Garçon to work with quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo in 2018 when the latter started after he went on IR, however with the ACL tear suffered by Garoppolo and Garcon going in and out of the lineup due to his own injuries, it’s been a step down from expectations.

Garçon signed a five-year contract with the 49ers in the 2017 offseason. If released in 2019 before June 1st, the 49ers would carry $7.2 million in dead money per Over the Cap. If cut after the deadline, the hit is a bit less at $2.4 million. Despite the dead money, a release is a distinct possibility. Garçon will be 33 years old in 2019 and the 49ers have bolstered their wide receiver group the last two years with several undrafted free agent and draft pick signings. Dante Pettis in particular has begun to rise as a decent threat on the field and Kendrick Bourne has gotten more looks in Garçon’s absence.

Some decisions will have to be made.
