Al Wilson is set to be honored by the Broncos at halftime against the Browns.
Al Wilson retired from the Denver Broncos in 2006. He joined Ryan Edwards, Andrew Mason, and Steve Atwater to discuss his return to Denver after being away for so long. For a little context, Wilson’s departure from the franchise was not a pretty one. A trade to the New York Giants fell through when he failed his physical. He filed and lost a malpractice suit against the team doctor, and has made it known in the past that he did not care for the organization.
That has been a bit of a sticking point for many fans in Broncos Country. For good reason, Al Wilson is a fan favorite. He was a five time Pro-Bowler (2001-2003, 2005, 2006), and an AP 1st Team All-Pro (2005) and 2nd Team All-Pro (2006). Wilson is probably considered the last great middle linebacker the team has had.

Knowing the history of his departure, and the impact he had while in Denver, for many fans, it is just great to have him back in the building. Wilson gives a good interview, but Mason asks him a question that is on the minds of every fan. Knowing how things for Wilson ended on a sour note with the Broncos, how will it feel when he eventually is honored in the Ring of Fame?
Even in his answer, you can tell that Wilson still struggles with his departure from Denver. However, he also talked about how special it would be for him to be honored with a place on the façade at Mile High Stadium.
It’s something that would be special if it were to happen... it would definitely be something that I would totally be grateful for the rest of my life.
The NFL is a fickle business, and when teams are done with players, they often cast them aside. Unfortunately for Wilson and the Broncos, the end was nowhere near storybook. For most fans it was a sorry chapter in the history of the team. It seems that both sides are looking to reconcile. The best part will be watching the team honor Wilson, and eventually seeing his name on the Ring of Fame where it belongs.
