Browns’ defensive snap counts, stats, and PFF notes: Week 13

The Browns’ defense technically only allowed one touchdown against the Texans, meaning they would’ve kept Cleveland in it with a better offensive day.

Below, we analyze the snap counts and stats on defense for the Cleveland Browns’ Week 13 game against the Houston Texans.

  • Even though Myles Garrett was involved in a couple of sacks, for the Texans being as thin as they were up front, the hope was that he would be more of a factor. Per PFF, he wasn’t:

Myles Garrett recorded a couple of sacks, but for the majority of the game, he was absent in the passing game. He simply couldn’t generate consistent pressure through out the game.

  • Larry Ogunjobi suffered a biceps injury, limiting his action against Houston. Brian Price therefore saw an uptick in reps with 42% of the snaps, and Trevon Coley had the unusually high number of assists (6).
  • Welcome back to the pass-rushing department, Genard Avery! Per PFF, he generated pressure on a high percentage of his pass-rushing attempts, finishing the game with one sack:

Avery forced six pressures in his 15 pass-rush snaps - including one sack - earning the highest pass rushing productivity rating (pressures created per rush, weighted toward sacks) among all edge defenders with at least five pass-rush snaps in Week 13.

  • No linebacker graded in the Top 5 defensively for the Browns this week.
  • T.J. Carrie fought with DeAndre Hopkins during the game, as the two were getting chippy with each other. There were a couple of plays in which Carrie was flagged for holding despite there not being much of anything there; but then there were also some in which he wasn’t flagged when he could have been — probably because Hopkins was hand-fighting too.
  • With Denzel Ward leaving the game early (concussion), Phillip Gaines was forced into heavy action. PFF gave him credit for his performance, noting he was the second-highest graded defender on the day for Cleveland:

His coverage grade of 78.4 ranked 15th among qualifying cornerbacks this week, and his 61.5 passer-rating-allowed ranked him 20th. Gaines gave up two catches on four targets for 17 yards in his 23 snaps in coverage.

  • Briean Boddy-Calhoun was the Browns’ highest-graded defender (92.0) by far. He also had a sack that was negated due to a penalty.
  • The snap distribution has become the norm for awhile now: Jabrill Peppers is the definitive starter, while Derrick Kindred sees rotational reps. Peppers could’ve easily been flagged once for tossing Hopkins down after the whistle.
  • Damarious Randall was the Browns’ third-highest graded defender (74.4).
