Browns’ offensive snap counts, stats, and PFF notes: Week 13

A turnover-filled first half costs the Browns’ offense despite a solid second half.

Below, we analyze the snap counts and stats on offense for the Cleveland Browns’ Week 13 game against the Houston Texans.

• It was a bad first half for Baker Mayfield, who threw for three interceptions and was not feeling the Texans’ zone coverage quite right. When he attacked with longer distance throws in the second half, the throws he was making were, quite frankly, incredible. That deserved to be at least a three-touchdown effort in the second half (think of both the Callaway plays), which would’ve set up a more serious attempt to rally at the end.

• The Browns fell behind early, and with interceptions shortening drives, the gameplan just didn’t materialize for Nick Chubb to receive more carries. He continued to make nice plays as a receiver, and Cleveland’s screen game worked quite well this week.
• Duke Johnson only had 2 catches for 12 yards; he had another catch that went for 22 yards, but it was called back due to a holding penalty on Higgins.
• Dontrell Hilliard got some late action, and his receiving yards came via several dumpoffs with the defense dropping back.

• This was a bit of a throwback game for Jarvis Landry, who went over the 100-yard mark. With four games remaining, he is still slightly under pace to reach the 1,000-yard mark, but could get there with a couple more good games. He dropped one sideline pass off of a great hit by a Houston safety.
• This will be a lesson learned for Antonio Callaway — no matter how exhausted you are, until you are in the end zone, do not take anything for granted. Callaway’s catching ability has improved so dramatically, and it’s a shame that he couldn’t be rewarded for either of his 76-yard receptions. The first one was called back on a penalty, and the one a few plays later — which no doubt had him exhaused — saw him make a catch in traffic and take off. At the tail end of the play, he veered back to the middle of the field to score slightly quicker, not realizing a defender was chasing. If he continued his diagonal run to the corner of the end zone, he gets in.
• Rashard Higgins had another solid outing, this time getting more catches than he’s been getting the past few weeks. He passed up Breshad Perriman on the snap counts this week too.

• David Njoku followed up his best game as a pro with an underwhelming performance (that’s not to say it was his fault). One of his catches behind the line went for -5 yards, and he was also targeted on Mayfield’s long end zone pass at the end of the first half that was picked off (he was triple covered).
• Seth DeValve caught one pass. He also dropped a pass due to taking a big lick; it was initially ruled a fumble, but overturned to an incompletion.

• The Browns allowed 0 sacks for the third straight game, and only allowed 1 quarterback hit.
• The one blunder you can point at is the Greg Robinson hold that negated a long touchdown pass. However, on the same note, that is probably a forced fumble without the hold.
• Here is the praise that PFF gave to the Browns’ offensive line:

Mayfield was pressured on just 22.7% of his dropbacks on Sunday against the Texans, the second-lowest rate of any quarterback in Week 13. Over the last three games, the Browns interior offensive line of Joel Bitonio, JC Tretter, and Kevin Zeitler have allowed only five pressures in 309 combined pass-blocking snaps.
