Doug Marrone “confident” in Ronnie Harrison at strong safety

The Jacksonville Jaguars were inconsistent in the secondary leading up to last week’s shutout against the Indianapolis Colts. They gave up big plays to Dak Prescott, Andrew Luck (in the first meeting), and rookie Josh Allen — and some of the blame (deservedly) fell on veteran strong safety Barry Church.

A change was made. Ronnie Harrison made his first start last week and he took full advantage of it. He looked every bit the part of a third round rookie early in the game, picking up a taunting penalty that extended a Colts drive. But as the game wore on, he looked very comfortable in his role.

And for now, it seems, Harrison has earned the starting strong safety spot, a move that head coach Doug Marrone said he feels “comfortable” in.

“I’m comfortable with him having the ability to do it,” Marrone said after practice on Tuesday. “I just want to make sure that we take out the personal fouls. That’s something that I have talked to Ronnie about.”

Marrone is right. The personal foul could have been a key play and a back breaker in what finished as a 6-0 win for the Jaguars and the lowest scoring game in franchise history. Had the Colts scored even a field goal on the drive where Harrison was called for a 15-yard penalty on what would have been a fourth down.

It’ll be interesting to see how Harrison responds this Thursday night against a Titans offense that didn’t score a touchdown in their first meeting earlier in the season.
