The Lions are just 1-2, but they’ve played some of the toughest teams the league has to offer.
Ask any NFL player, and they’ll tell you moral victories are meaningless. That may be true, that may be posturing for the media just to make fans know that they aren’t “happy” with losing.
But if there’s one thing you can say about the Detroit Lions’ performance over the past three weeks, it’s been much more palatable on gamedays. In the previous three weeks, the Lions were blown out by the Seahawks, Vikings and Bears in embarrassing fashion. Each loss was by at least two scores, and it probably could’ve been worse. They fell behind 28-7, 24-6 and 26-0 in those games.
Against the Panthers, Bears and Rams, however, they were within a score in each game in the final quarter and were in position to win each. Obviously, they only won against the Panthers. So today’s Question of the Day is:
Are you impressed with how the Lions have played over the past three week?
My answer: Yes and no.
While it’s promising that the team is still battling hard despite astronomical playoff odds, this still isn’t a very good team to watch. Their offensive gameplan appears to be play keep away, which is very pretty and is even less entertaining. Defensively, they’re still allowing opposing quarterbacks to find wide open receivers on nearly every play.
That being said, I do have to give the team a little credit for still being able to run the ball and stop the run against some of the better teams in the NFL. Despite losing Kerryon Johnson to an injury, LeGarrette Blount has stepped in and been somewhat efficient with the ball in his hands—even against a stout defense like the Bears. And even up against some of the best rushing attacks in the league, the Lions have managed to slow the likes of Christian McCaffrey, Tarik Cohen and Todd Gurley.
No one is going to mistake this Lions team as a “good” team right now, but they’re competing and, at least, aren’t a complete embarrassment on game days. The defensive improvement, especially, is encouraging going forward, but it’s hard not to be continually frustrated by the offense.
