Eli Manning could be sticking around the NFC East for at least another season

As Week 15 rolled on (how are there only two left?!) reports surfaced all around the NFL world that the New York Giants were most likely going to remain committed to quarterback Eli Manning as their starter in 2019.

Dallas and New York are division rivals and play two games against each other every season. If they are inhibited by poor quarterback play that is a very good thing for the Dallas Cowboys.

Manning’s Giants will finish with less than eight wins for the fifth time in six seasons after these next two weeks are over and that’s hardly something that teams put up with when it comes to their franchise quarterback. If he throws one more interception he’ll have double-digit tallies in all but his rookie season; the chronicles of Eli Manning are well-told.

SportsNet New York put together their list of options that make the most sense as far as the Giants quarterback options in 2019 and shockingly Eli tops it.

1. Eli Manning
2. First-round rookie quarterback (the Giants are projected to have the ninth pick at the moment)
3. Teddy Bridgewater
4. Trade for Nick Foles
5. Trade for Joe Flacco
6. Journeyman backup (a better version of Eli)
7. Kyle Lauletta

Truthfully the Cowboys have benefited from the recent wins of the Giants as New York took care of the Washington Redskins in Week 14. They’ve also benefited in that New York has seemingly played themselves out of sure-fire range for a top rookie quarterback in the draft. New York is almost forcing themselves to have to abide by this list come the offseason.

Over the last six seasons the Cowboys have only fallen to Manning’s Giants three times, amazingly all in a row from the second matchup of 2015 through the 2016 season. Those wins are a bit fluky as Dallas was starting Matt Cassel in the first of the three and the Giants had an elite defense overpowering rookies Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott the following season. The point is Eli Manning has hardly been a thorn in the Cowboys side for the better part of a half decade and he is probably coming back for at least another round. That’s very good news.

It’s often said that NFL teams are built to win their division and the Cowboys at least don’t have to worry about New York in the foreseeable future in the same way they’ve had to with the Philadelphia Eagles and Carson Wentz for example. They also don’t necessarily have to worry about the Washington Redskins state of the quarterback position, but that’s a discussion for a different day.

The Cowboys are a win away from clinching the NFC East and that remains the sole focus of what matters around here. It is true though that the state of the Giants impacts what they do, including the second of the two remaining games on the season.

Ride the Eli train, Giants. Ride it forever, please.
