Eric Berry reported no setbacks, talked first game back with reporters after loss

Berry returned to the field for the first time in more than 450 days on Thursday night.

Kansas City Chiefs safety Eric Berry played in his first game in 462 days Thursday night against the Log Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs lost to the Chargers, 29-28.

After the game, Berry spoke with reporters.

“It felt pretty good,” Berry said. “I got a few different looks I couldn’t get at practice. I felt like we handled them well as a defense. Short week, but I think we did pretty well.”

Berry led the Chiefs with six tackles in the first half, and he also had a hand in Steve Nelson’s interception by pressuring Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers.

Berry checked out at halftime after 30 defensive snaps.

“He had his reps that first half and then we just backed off there,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said after the game. “We just wanted to see how he felt as we went. He gave us some good snaps there.”

“We came in with a plan and we just stuck with it,” Berry said. “We didn’t want to push it past that, so we just stayed true to that.”

When asked about a specific snap count, Berry said that was between him and Reid, but he did report there were no setbacks.

Berry had actually considered returning for the Baltimore Ravens game on Sunday but thought better of it.

“There was still that hesitation I guess,” Berry said. “I didn’t feel it in my spirit, so I just said I would wait ‘til this week.”

Berry said this week against the Chargers “felt right.”

“Just sitting around and talking to my parents and talking to the coaches and the staff, it just felt like this was a good time to come in and get something going.”

It is difficult to tell if it was the short rest and the eventual fatigue the comes with it, or Berry’s presence, or Chargers adjustments or a little bit of all three, but Bob Sutton’s unit was visibly better in the first half than it was in the second.

When it came to Berry specifically, he looked sharp and was a breath of fresh air when it came to tackling.

Had he been able to play the whole game, it is hard to believe he couldn’t have swung a one-point loss in the Chiefs’ direction.
