The New York Jets have placed second year safety Marcus Maye on the injured reserve list with a shoulder injury that may require surgery. This ends Marcus Maye’s injury plagued second season with the Jets. Maye ends his season having played in just six games. Despite the lack of playing time Maye is currently seventh on the team with 34 tackles. The highlight of Maye’s season was his near pick six, in which he returned an interception 104 yards without scoring.
Marcus Maye will be replaced on the 53 man roster by second year safety/cornerback Jeremy Clark. Jeremy Clark is a 24 year old, 6’ 3”, 220 pound defensive back out of the University of Michigan. Clark was selected by the Jets with the 197th selection in the sixth round of the 2017 NFL draft. Clark spent most of the 2017 season on the injured reserve list with a torn ACL before being activated in December 2017. Clark played one game for the Jets in 2017 without registering a statistic. In 2018 Jeremy Clark was among those cut just prior to the start of the season. The Jets then signed Clark to the practice squad, where he has remained until today. With the Jets top two free safeties in Marcus Maye and Doug Middleton now on injured reserve, they have been reduced to playing cornerback Darryl Roberts at the position. Clark, a much bigger and more physical player, with safety experience in college, might have an opportunity to take on the role over the last few weeks of the 2018 season. This could be Jeremy Clark’s best chance to state his case for continued employment with the Jets going forward after making no impact up until now.
