Pro Football Talk says Eagles could be a team that claims Kareem Hunt

The website speculates the controversial running back could be targeted by Philadelphia.

Just a day after the Kansas City Chiefs cut star running back Kareem Hunt after they say he lied to them about a domestic battery incident that happened back in February, a new report says the suddenly “available” Hunt could still draw interest from a number of teams.

And one of those teams could be the Eagles.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk said this in a post on Saturday afternoon.

Surely, he’ll eventually be cleared to play. While Hunt’s misconduct merits punishment, it doesn’t merit banishment. (Then again, Colin Kaepernick’s conduct, which wasn’t even misconduct, resulted in banishment.) At some point, the league will impose punishment on Hunt, Hunt will serve an unpaid suspension, and Hunt then will be able to play.

This isn’t an over-the-hill Ray Rice, whose best football days were behind him. This is a guy who led the league in rushing as a rookie. He’ll get his second chance somewhere, just not in Kansas City.

Potential candidates include, as mentioned last night, the Eagles. Also, the Browns currently are run by the guy who drafted Hunt in Kansas City. And what if Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy ends up coaching his own team (which could be Cleveland)?

At his Saturday meeting with the press, head coach Doug Pederson was asked about the team’s policy regarding signing players like Hunt and Reuben Foster.

“I’m not going to get into the policy stuff for protecting the Eagles. But, you know, obviously there’s not a place for this kind of behavior. It’s unfortunate because two good, great players for their respective teams so it’s just unfortunate. But, you know, it’s something you hope doesn’t happen and you just hate it for everybody involved because it’s not good. It’s not good at all.” (quote via NJ.com’s Zack Rosenblatt)

Florio initially mentioned the Eagles as a potential suitor on Friday night, just hours after Hunt had been cut after video surfaced showing him in a violent altercation that took place last February. Team officials and the NFL said they had not seen the videotape until it was released on Friday. The NFL placed Hunt on the commissioner’s exempt list hours after that tape was made public, and Kansas City cut him almost immediately thereafter.

Hunt burst onto the scene in his rookie season last year, rushing for 1327 yards and adding 455 yards in the air with 11 TDs. He was having another spectacular season as part of the Chiefs’ vaunted offensive attack, with 827 yards rushing and 378 receiving yards, with 14 total TDs. The Eagles have struggled at running back for much of the season with the loss of Jay Ajayi and Darren Sproles to injuries for most of the year.
