The Los Angeles Rams walked away from their matchup with the Detroit Lions with an 11-1 record, but the game was much closer than the 30-16 final score would indicate.
Wags’ 5 Rams to watch played well overall, but most left room for improvement as well. Let’s take a look.
Aqib Talib
It’s fair to qualify Talib’s return as a success. The Rams have struggled with big WRs all season and the secondary held Lions WR Kenny Golliday to 50 yards on 3 catches. Combined, the Lions WRs only accumulated 110 yards - quite the display from a defense that struggled during Talib’s absence.
Todd Gurley
What more can you say about Gurley at this point? He leads the NFL in rushing yards and rushing TDs - and has yet to fumble this season (knocking on wood).
Oh, and he willingly gives up TDs for the benefit of the team.
Don’t lose sight of how special JTG has been, Rams fans.
Andrew Whitworth
Whitworth - along with the rest of the Rams offensive line played well against the Lions. That said, they weren’t AS dominant as they had been. I think Wags may be on to something here, and it bears watching as the playoffs approach.
Last season, Whitworth’s play seemed to decline just a notch down the stretch, and dare I say we’ve seen a bit of the same thing from the aging great this year. He’s still elite, but he’s getting beat a little bit more often
Samson Ebukam
It seems Ebukam used all of his big plays against the Kansas City Chiefs. In his follow-up performance, he disappeared as he only collected 2 tackles and had a hand in allowing the Lions previously unknown TE Levine Toilolo to rack up almost 100 yards and 22.5 yards per catch.
The Rams need more consistency from their LBs and if Ebukam can find a happy medium between his performances against the Chiefs and Lions, I think we would all be happier.
Gerald Everett and Tyler Higbee
The Rams TEs only hauled in 3 catches for 26 yards, which comes as a surprise as TEs are usually a safety valve for QBs under pressure. This is compounded when you consider that QB Jared Goff lost his favorite safety net when WR Cooper Kupp went down with an ACL injury.
Goff looked to his TEs more in the immediate aftermath of the Kupp injury, but it doesn’t seem that mentality survived the bye week.
