Undrafted rookie from Vanderbilt shines in loss to the Lions
The Arizona Cardinals have struggled throughout the 2018 season and it comes to no surprise that they lost to the Detroit Lions.
But one of the biggest takeaways from this game is the fact that rookie WR Trent Sherfield stepped up when many others did not.
With Christian Kirk placed on injury reserve and Chad Williams inactive yet again, Sherfield was in line for a big work load. Last night, he made the first start of his NFL career and he did not disappoint in the spotlight. He caught five of seven targets for 77 yards, leading the Cardinals in receiving yards in the loss. So far this season, he has caught 8 of 13 targets for 110 yards.
Chad Williams and J.J. Nelson were ahead of him on the depth chart in week one. But Sherfield has worked his way up to a bigger role beyond special teams as the other two receivers continue to struggle.
In Williams’ eight games with five starts, he caught 11 of 25 targets for 113 yards and a touchdown. He has been inactive the past five games due to a hamstring injury.
Nelson wasn’t much better than Williams. He caught 7 of 19 targets for 64 yards in 13 games.
Williams has not lived up to the standards of a third-round pick and Nelson’s once-promising career is now trending in the wrong direction.
There is no question that the Cardinals are in need of more play makers on the offense but Sherfield’s strong performance last night could mean that he has a future with this team beyond 2018.
He will likely remain the starter opposite Larry Fitzgerald for the remainder of the season.
