Choosing the eight most important Cowboys isn’t as easy as you might think.
The world got back to business on Monday morning and that means that normal talk and radio shows did as well. The Herd with Colin Cowherd is one of the more-frequented programs across the country and, shocker here, they were talking about the Dallas Cowboys.
An interesting debate surfaced when discussing America’s Team, one that’s seemingly impossible to answer (yet we all try). Who are the most important members of the squad?
You can define most important in a number of ways:
- Who does the most for team on the field?
- Who is the leader of the organization?
- Who keeps them focused?
- Who touches the ball most?
- Who is generating the most (insert blank here)?
It’s a subjective process but an interesting one nonetheless.
Colin Cowherd gave determining the eight most important Dallas Cowboys his best go, and there were a lot of people who disagreed with him. It’s important to note that he didn’t just limit it to players as he included members from the coaching staff as well.

We took it upon ourselves within BTB to discuss this list in great length. Where is it obviously correct? Where is it wrong? Who was left out? Eight sounds like a large number but you run out of spots quickly when talking about a team that’s won four games in a row.
Despite how difficult the process was we each put together our own individual lists of the eight most important members of the Dallas Cowboys. Behold!

It’s very interesting to see how different the respective rankings are. There is an obvious amount of credit thrown towards the likes of Ezekiel Elliott and DeMarcus Lawrence, but Dak Prescott is a tad lower on some lists than he is on others.
Nobody ranked Leighton Vander Esch higher than third, and there are many Cowboys fans who would argue he’s the reason for the four-game winning streak (to a degree of course). Also worth pointing out is that head coach Jason Garrett leads two lists while he is completely left off of many others. Again, this is a subjective process.
