Browns looking at new deals for a trio of players

Team is in talks with wide receivers Rashard Higgins, Breshad Perriman, along with left tackle Greg Robinson.

The Cleveland Browns are having preliminary discussions on new contracts for wide receivers Breshad Perriman and Rashard Higgins, as well as left tackle Greg Robinson.

Perriman and Higgins are both set to be free agents in March, while the club is talking about a contract extension for Robinson, according to cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

General manager John Dorsey, who is in Mobile, Ala., this week scouting the Senior Bowl, said that while it is still early, the club is interested in keeping all three players:

“We’ve had conversations with [Perriman’s and Higgins’] representatives and we’ll continue to have conversations,. Once we get the chance to get the new coaching staff in place and we have an assessment of our team and the positions, then I’ll be able to better answer that question.”

“I like Greg and I like everything he represents. With regard to could he be our left tackle, we’ve had ongoing conversations with his representatives. He’s a very young man who has incredible athletic gifts. Sometimes you have to be a little patient with guys like that. You have to earn their trust. He did everything he was asked and everything we thought he would since we signed him in late June.’’

It would be quite a turn of events if the Browns keep all three players.

Higgins was a fifth-round selection in the 2016 NFL Draft, but was waived after initially making the final roster. He was signed to the team’s practice squad and eventually made his way back onto the 53-man roster.

He is coming off his best season after catching 39 passes for 572 yards and four touchdowns in 2018, including a catch rate of 73.6 percent.

Perriman is a former first-round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens who the Browns signed midway through the season. While he did not put up big numbers, just 16 receptions for 340 yards and two touchdowns, Perriman did average a tidy 21.3 yards per reception.

Like Perriman, Robinson is a former first-round draft pick that appeared to be on his final chance. The Browns signed Robinson in June, but he missed a large portion of training camp and the preseason with a concussion.

Robinson opened the season on the bench behind rookie Desmond Harrison, but took over the starting role in November after Harrison sustained a concussion. While he only graded out as the league’s 63rd best tackle, according to Pro Football Focus, but appears to have shown the Browns enough that they are open to bringing him back.
